Safe Mode: On
Israel, Syria, and the double standards of the Free World

By Carlo Strenger , Haaretz,08.02.12

I have for years opposed Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, and I continue to be appalled by Israel’s continuing expansion of settlements. But I'm running into a linguistic problem: if I use ‘appalled’ for Israel’s treatment of Palestinians, what term is left for Assad’s butchering of his own people for almost a year?

[b]It would be of great importance for Israel’s more one-sided critics to acknowledge, once in a while, that Israel is located in a pretty rough neighborhood. Israel’s citizens would feel a bit more understood, if these critics were to express sympathy for Israel’s genuine, if flawed, attempt to maintain a liberal democracy in the midst of regimes that often commit outrageous crimes against humanity. At times, when I hear some of the critical comments on Israel, one might think that Israel is Belgium, and that for unintell

  • There IS no Palestine.
The sand-monkey's were driven out by Jordan because even the other ayrab's don't want the Asshole's.
Palestine like izzlam, is a vile lie, and a curse.

  • You assume to much in that Israel is being condemned at all by the "free world". I and millions and millions more like me see Israel as a unified country under attack and defending itself against a religion that feels jews (and christians) should be removed from the face of the earth. Syria is in the midst of a civil war where it's citizens are anything but unified and wish to overthrow it's oppressive government. To compare the two is like comparing apples to orangutans(Maybe a bit un More..

  • Peace is not happening, forget it.
Both sides have good excuses to blame the other and there is only one Ron Paul.

In order to have peace in Middle East, we'd need about 8 Ron Pauls.

  • Carlo Strenger usually writes against Israel current policies in his blog, so any attempt to portray him as a Zionist supporter or other shit like that will be very lame.

This is specailly for ED and some of his buddies here, who prefer to deall every day with every and each fart some brainless settler kids are doing, and total ignore places like Syria...

    * The picture shows the death toll in Syria since the sart of the uprising there.

    • @aydeo Considering the fact that the 'free-world' has slapped massive sanctions on Syria, threatened it with the possibility of war and told Assad to stand down...where is the double-standard?

Israel faces nothing even close to the co-ordinated Intl action taken against both Assad and Ghadaffi prior

Beyond this, Israel is many ways a European State in the Middle East. Thus Westerners tend to judge it by Western standards and not Assad's standards (which are non-existent).

No, it's not- I'm not talking here about the governments (And so is Mr. Strenger)

On the contrary- the western gov. has all the rights to put pressure on my gov.

We are talking about the different reaction of people like you (you are not the only one but you represent them here, just as I represent the Left in Israel), who have no problem calling themselves 'Liberals' but in fact are 'liberals' only when it comes to Israel policies (or the American ones in some cases), but t More..

  • It's easy for us as Americans to sit back and criticize Israels actions... But imagine for a second that America wasn't bordered by Canada and Mexico but rather bordered by countries who called for he destruction of America and lobbed rockets over the border.. Those countries would be occupied almost immediately by America... But we criticize Israel for doing far less than what us Americans would do in the same situation... If Mexico's president came out tomorrow and called for the destruction o More..

    • @seanwoody716 Its a really dumb comparison because America was envisaged and built as an 'anti-colonial' power (Indians aside). While Israel is knowingly taking privately owned land on the West Bank in order to move its own people in.

But are you really surprised that Comanche and Apache's raided homesteads and massacred people?

    • @seanwoody716 Is it really easy to criticize Israels actions? I see the actions of Israel strictly as self defense.

    • @Pure_Adrenaline No it's not easy for me to criticize Israels actions and i'm with you... But it sure seems easy for allot of people blame the tension on Israel's "occupation" of the west bank.. Such as Obummas administration which has clearly tries to tie the hands of Israel to create "peace" with muslims who don't want it..

I guess i mainly refer to our people in office rather than the average American citizen (i should have been more specific)

    • @ElegantDecline I wasn't making a direct comparison.. I was stating if Mexico was hypothetically (key word hypothetical) being actively aggressive on a large scale such as Palestinians (i.e lobbing rockets across the border) we would not allow it and American citizens would expect nothing less.

Obviously you cannot make a comparison based on how things are in reality today as Mexico does not do these things (the cartels do on a smaller scale but its not supported by the majority of the populati More..
