Worthy of the Medal of Honor
As Far as I am concerned this is worthy of the Medal of Honor and I am sure those platoons in the 2-7 Battalion of the 24th Infantry Division would agree. 2 days prior to the offical start of the war or not. They were all under orders.

THere has been two MOH recipients so far in Iraq. Cpl Dunham, Marines, awarded MOH for sacrificing himself by jumping on a grenade.
SFC Smith, Army, awarded MOH for killing an estimated 50 insurgents with the .50 Cal before being overrun and shot to death.

Nerves of steel, good piloting skillz, and an overwhelming desire to provide protection for the soldiers pinned down on the ground. He deserves a standing 'O' from the entire nation. Consideration for a medal will come along down the road.

Is the Bronze Star medal with the Valor insignia awarded to pilots? This sounds a lot more like what happened. The most recent MOH was awarded to Maj. Bruce Crandall who servered back in the Vietnam war. I don't think anyone has been even considered for this citation in Iraq.

And God Bless his parents, family, and friends. Their loss is one more reason to preserve this great nation.

Medal of Honor
From Wikipedia
The Medal of Honor has been awarded only four times, all of them posthumously, for actions occurring since the withdrawal of US forces from Vietnam in 1973.[3][18][49] The first two were earned by Sergeant First Class Randy Shughart and Master Sergeant Gary Gordon, who were defending downed Black Hawk helicopter pilot Chief Warrant Officer Michael Durant and his crew during the Battle of Mogadishu in 1993. The others were awarded during the Iraq Campaign. In 2005, More..
