It's not clear to me yet what the Russians hope to gain. South Ossetia is tiny, about 1500 sq. miles, slightly larger than Luxembourg. It's a total backwater of no value whatsoever. I'll take a guess and say that Putin is just flexing some muscle as a warning to Georgia: don't even think about joining NATO. Just a guess.
