This post is an update to http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=090_1339984459 originally posted yesterday, 6/17/12, by LL user thinkslaughter (who has blocked me since I have a pesky habit of posting facts exposing lies of right wing propagandists). The item at the link above was given the title:
"Left Wing Marxist Cocaine Addict Bill Maher OWNED HARD by George Will! LOL!"
And then there is the description: "Bill Maher is a D list rat faced cocaine fiend desperate to remain in the spotlight after a failed media career..." a typical ad hominem attack strategy used when an individual does not have facts or logic on their side in a debate.
The FACT is, Bill Maher was 100% correct regarding his comments on Brazil and their 1970's Ethanol program to tremendously reduce their dependence on oil. He was not "owned hard" by George Will, much less owned at all. But thinkslaughter and his crowd have little use for facts. Since many of us do care about facts, I now present them.
FACTS: With the 1973 oil crisis, the Brazilian government initiated in 1975 the Pró-Álcool program. The Pró-Álcool or Programa Nacional do Álcool (National Alcohol Program) was a nation-wide program financed by the government to phase out all automobile fuels derived from fossil fuels in favour of ethanol. The program successfully reduced by 10 million the number of cars running on gasoline in Brazil, thereby reducing the country's dependence on oil imports.
Ethanol fuel is produced from sugar cane. Brazil has the largest sugar cane crop in the world, Brazil is the world's second largest producer of ethanol fuel and is the largest exporter of ethanol in the world.

As much as I hate Maher, his point that the two parties are essentially the same when it comes to policies is spot-on.
And Brazil has a massive oil industry. Look up a company called Petrobras.

You are right. And they are doing this at the expense of the Amazon rainforest, clearing the forests for cane fields. The government is slowly curtailing this practice, which will impact how far they can convert over to just ethanol.

Again a bit of perspective.
When beef & soy prices rose in 2007-08 deforestation rose.
Same when the prospect of Bio-Fuels as an alternative to oil was all the rage.
Much of the deforestation is attributed to logging for the wood alone, legal & illegal.
Brazilian rainforests are not being deforested to fuel Brazilian cars. The deforestation is good old exploitation of the lands resources
for money...what ever the flavor of the week may be.

Bill Maher was right about them having a pro ethanol program.
What he said though, was that they were "off oil."
They absolutely aren't.
George Will is correct that they are still using gas, lots of it.

gregsto,
All cars in Brazil still use gasoline, albeit a blend of gasoline that has been thinned with some Ethanol.
The bottom line is that Brazil is still highly dependent on oil, as their fuel is 75% regular gasoline, and 25% ethanol. (although its only 18% now due to an ethanol shortage)
Bill says sugarcane fuels their cars, when in fact, sugarcane is only makes a small portion of their fuel.
So George’s question remains, how does Bill claim that Brazil got off oil, when clearly, the gas More..

@wharris Automobiles in Brazil run either on hydrous alcohol (E100) or on gasohol blend. So, no, not all cars in Brazil still use gasoline, albeit a blend of gasoline that has been thinned with some Ethanol. The accurate statement is that by law all vehicles must now be manufactured so that they can run on a 25% minimum mix gasahol.

Just a little perspective.
The U.S., with a population of 311 million as of 2011, consumes over 19 million barrels a day. We're the #1 consumer of oil china a distant #2 at about 7.8 mil a day
Brazil, population at close to 200 mil. as of 2010 ranks #7 in oil consumption at about 2.5 million barrels a day.
So I guess George Will could walk away and say Brazil ranks # 7 in oil consumption ahead of Canada (#8)...they burn a lot of oil.
But in the context of the argument which was, in a nut she More..

@Peckerhead See, now there you go pointing out that Maher was making a cogent argument about the poor energy policy of the US when CLEARLY the more important and thoughtful approach is to call him a "rat faced cocaine fiend desperate to remain in the spotlight" regardless of how much sense he makes.

Population isn't the only measure here, though. The U.S. economic production is many, many times greater than Brazil's or even China's is.
China uses slightly less than half the oil we do, which makes sense because their GDP is less than half the size of ours, plus they also burn more coal than we do. Our economic output is about $15 trillion versus theirs of about $7 trillion.
Brazil, meanwhile, has an economic output of about $2.5 trillion, and their oil consumption reflects More..

I would not classify most of the conservatives on LL as being on Star53 and Thinkslaughter level. I have discussed and agreed/disagreed with many who have rational thoughts based off fact. But alas the Deep Red horde rapes the comment sections with insults instead of debate.

So what did that do to the price of sugar in Brazil? Do you eat much steak? I'm guessing your a a vegan because the reason steak prices, pork prices, chicken, etc...has sky rocketed in the US is because the price of corn (the food these animals eat) has sky rocketed due to the demand for corn driven up by ethanol production. And its a proven fact that it takes more energy to produce a gallon of ethanol than that gallon of ethanol actually produces, so you are in a lose/lose situation at the ge More..

Do you realize what an idiotic defense of Maher this is, gregsto? Maher said that Brazil got off oil. A reduction in the number of cars running on gasoline is not getting off oil. It's just reducing consumption. Add into that the oil consumed in farming the sugar cane, the massive reduction in rain forest through slash-and-burn agriculture techniques, which not only wiped out a huge carbon sink but also sent tons and tons of pollutants into the air, and the fact that Brazil's economy was tin More..

What Bill should have said, is that Brazil is energy independent. They do not import oil because of the 70's program mentioned.
They are simply energy independent. They are not sucking on the tit of OPEC like the USA does.
Why cant the USA also be energy independent?
