Generally, you don't want to see something like that at your local nuclear power plant.

The news said that it was a pump that blew up. The actual containment building inside that outer shell is OK. Unlike the old style Soviet reactors which did not have a separate inner shell.
Still, this is a way bad thing.
Now they are going to use seawater to cool the reactor slowly.
This is going to mess up the IPad launch as well so that many people depending on that cash inflow will be sucking more than they already are.
What a bad thing to happen to Japan.

An explosion in a reactor buildings are effectively subterranean because of the thickness of the walls of the plant. Explosions at nuclear plants are rarely nuclear explosions (unless its a breeder reactor) but usually a result of hydrogen or steam build up. This looks like the roof of the reactor blew off. The problem with this is that it then leaves the reactor core exposed to the elements.

Well, I can kiss my girlfriend's business in Japan goodbye this year, maybe forever.

It appears the blast was subterranean, as the shock wave travelled vertically. Just as well it was`nt at ground level as the shock wave could have travelled laterally also, causing greater damage to the surrounding plant.

Well they did survive radiation once already.
No but seriously, I know they will be back on their feet in no time.

That was likely the containment building where pressure built up to such an intense level it had nowhere to go but out and up. The core was not fully cooled down because the facilities necessary to do that all failed in terms of power, i.e. the main power grid then deisel backup generator then the batteries. Cooling down a core takes about two days and the Japanese simply ran out of time on battery power. That's a likely scenario, only time will time, but what is clear is irradiated steam is More..

Google `Chandlers Wobble`.
Also Edgar Cayce had a few things to say on the matter.
