Big explosion recorded on Jupiter’s surface
A 5 second video clip shows a large
explosion on Jupiter’s surface. For the fourth time if four years a
large explosion has been discovered on the largest planet in our Solar
System.
These explosions are important
because the size of the blasts indicate what kind of flying masses are
out there, that could strike our planet. This blast occurred on September 10th 2012.

Jupiter is what keeps asteroids from hitting the Earth. Thank God for Jupiter and it's giant mass/gravitational pull!

"the blasts indicate what kind of flying masses are out there, that could strike our planet"
Luckily Jupiter and the other large planets are all further from the Sun than we are. They're the linebackers that catch almost all of these large meteors.

@ST0N3PONY And most other solar systems has these gas giant planets close to the star. In ours, I wonder what moved them out there to protect us? :)

@Horno Well, I'm not religious. But yeah, there is a laundry list of similar factors that make life on Earth possible. Our molten core is one. Without it we wouldn't have the magnetic field that protects us from the sun. Our atmosphere and water would have blown away in solar winds, like on Mars. Having a large moon is also key.

@Horno Nothing moved them out there, they formed out where they are.

That reminds me of some nut posting on Facebook that if Earth was 15 meters closer to the sun we'd all burn and 15 meters further away we'd all die before proudly exclaiming “Isn't God great?"
Then someone posted the fact that the distance varies by thousands of kilometers each year and surely enough, a shit storm commenced.

Eat a half-dozen or so enchiladas from Taco Bell, and there'd be another big explosion - on Uranus.

I keep up with the NASA website and haven't seen this yet.
Jupiter is a Huuuuge Bitch. Any thing that flies into it leaves a "foot print" that lasts a long time. That impact is about the size of the Earth, and most certainly would leave a visible mark afterwards.

We probably do have a Binary star. I think it was 80%-90% of stars have a companion.

Damn lucky we didn't evolve on a gas giant far from the solar wind and gravity well, between the asteroid and kuiper belts. Because this s#it could be dangerous otherwise!

It doesn't look like an impact. Looks more like some kind of discharge...what kind I don't know. But as I sit here thinking about it more, it could also be something exploding in the atmosphere, which is why there is no visible scarring to the planet (dust cloud).

@safetychuck2 jupiter doesn't have a surface, its a gas giant. the center is solid hydrogen caused by the gravity.i believe we sent a probe inside once and it imploded while descending.
