Police Attempt to Revive Montreal Mobster After Shooting

Salvatore (Sal the Ironworker) Montagna, 40 was shot by unknown assailants shortly after 10 a.m. Thursday on Ille Vaudry, an island northeast of Montreal. According to witnesses, Montagna, whose nickname came from his ownership of a steel company, jumped into the Assomption River after being shot. Police found him next to the river shortly afterwards and attempted to provide CPR, but he died en route to the hospital.

Montagna is notable for having briefly been the head of the Bonnano Crime Family in New York before being deported to his birthplace of Montreal in 2009, and is the latest casualty in a series of killings of mafia figures in that city over the past four years.
