A trailer has finally been released for the upcoming “Act of Valor” movie that has created a lot of pre-release buzz because the Navy SEALS in the film are played by actual active-duty SEALS.
The movie is loosely based on previously conducted Navy SEAL missions, and SEALS advised on all the tactics and action sequences. The film reportedly has the full support and backing of the Navy, which would seem necessary, as active duty U.S. Navy SEALS aren’t just consulting for the film– they are starring in it.
And from what the trailer shows, the Department of Defense was quite willing to supply aircraft, submarines, and assorted high-tech gadgets to make “Act of Valor” the most realistic SEAL film to date.
A synopsis and a new trailer have just been released, and the visuals already look pretty incredible. While fictional, “Act of Valor” will try to fit its plot into current events to heighten realism, which according to the Collider means the film “follows a Navy SEAL squad on a covert mission to recover a kidnapped CIA agent, and in the process takes down a complex web of terrorist cells determined to strike America at all costs.
The filmmakers had unprecedented access to Naval Special Warfare resources, which led to never-before-seen military operation scenes. In fact, part of the film’s ultra-realism comes from the fact that it started out as a recruitment video for Naval Special Warfare Command. Now, “Act of Valor” is set for a multi-million dollar release.
“Act of Valor” hopes to capitalize on the heightened interested in Navy SEALS after the successful SEAL Team 6 mission to kill Osama Bin Laden in May. It is scheduled to be released many months ahead of Kathryn Bigelow’s also highly anticipated “Killing Bin Laden” film, which is supposed to hit theaters this fall.
The screenwriter for “Act of Valor,” Kurt Johnstad, is already well-known for a smash-hit film showcasing the military of ancient Sparta in 300. Other than SEALS and unknown actors in lead roles, the film will co-star Roselyn Sanchez of “Rush Hour 2” and Emilio Rivera of “Traffic.”
While many of its action sequences were shot to to mimic first person video game combat experiences, directors Scott Waugh and Mike McCoy tried to capture more than just the SEALS’ incredible battlefield skills. Mike McCoy has said of his hopes for the film:
“We believe the authenticity of Act of Valor will transcend demographic, race and political lines. We hope viewers will get a rare glimpse into the SEAL community and that their lives will be as enriched by the experience as ours have been.”
