Flash Flood! Hiking in Zion National Park Quickly turns dangerous.

I have hiked this route (Overlook Trail) many times in Zion National Park.During July and August, huge summer storms roll in and can ...well,watch the video.Anyone caught down in the canyon hiking or Canyoneering will almost certainly die. There have been more then a few Deaths in Zion National Park from drowning and falls and rock falls.A quick Google search using "Canyoneering Deaths and Deaths at Zion NP" will show just how many. I have a cabin not far from here in Duck Creek Village and will retire here hopefully. One of the prettiest places in the world,in my opinion. Much more fun then the Grand Canyon as well. If you ever visit America, put this park on top of the list.

  • As impressive as the video is, I'm sure it doesn't come close to actually experiencing that. Mother Nature is at the top of the food chain. Voted.

Zion is very cool as is Bryce right next to it, but my favorite was Red Canyon because you can rent quads there and drive on a three hour guided tour... That was the best!

  • I've been there, about 8 years ago. About eight of us rode our Sport bikes there. Absolutely a beautiful place. Love the tunnel on the side of the hill. We raced our bikes through there. The Park Rangers gave us a little crap, but they got cool to us being there after a while.

  • Great video, I had a place in ST George & loved going there for hikes.
If your going to play in mother nature around those parts you better understand & respect it.

    Right after you said:

  • Utah is one of the best and most beautiful states in the country. You have amazing rock formations, hiking, rock climbing, and off-roading in the South, then just drive about 4 hours North and you have amazing mountains to hike and some of the best ski resorts in the country. My family has a house in Midway, UT in the middle of Heber valley and we try to make it there every year for the Sundance Film Festival. All of Hollywood seems to decend upon the small town of Park City. Last year we saw Fo More..

You are exactly right. Phenomenal state.I have a cabin in Duck Creek Village but have been shopping for a bigger parcel of land there.I'd like 5-10 acres. Spent all my summers there as a kid. That whole lower portion of Utah could classify as a National Park for it's beauty alone. I have friends in both Midway and Heber City. I have even jumped on the Heber Creeper, lol! Park City is a blast.

    • @Fire37Rescue Props on the cabin. Nice area around Duck Creek Village. If you're looking for land, I suggest anywhere along the northern Provo river.

And yes the Heber Creeper is classic lol. Best time to do it in my opinion is in the fall when the leaves are changing and it looks like all the hills are on fire. Amazingly beatiful. PC is the tits. Althought lately I have been partial to the Canyons resort. New management there has installed heated/covered ski lifts and all out PBR drunk fests e More..

Yeah, I messed around that area when I went to BYU. Climbed Mt Timpanogos etc.Very nice indeed. But the Colored rocks and geology of the Southern Utah area is what get's me.The Desert meets the Alpine forests kind of deal. Like you are on a different planet. Used to drive up to Park City to party back in the day.Bunch of us wrestlers and BYU Football players would pile into a van,get a bunch of those little booze bottles that airlines had a make a weekend out of it.Back then you had t More..

  • There is something deeply moving about Zion NP and it's beauty is truly unrivaled (even though grand canyon is amazing as well). What a lucky man to be able to retire there.

as for the flash floods, that is scary and I will surely keep an eye to the sky if I ever visit again and find myself in any of the many canyons.

  • I love Zion...

When I lived on the mainland, my pals and I would go climbing there. My favorite routes are on Moonlight Buttress.

  • I've hiked there during spring break and got caught in a blizzard on the rim. It was incredible. The next morning, we saw cougar tracks through our campsite.

I will go back to Zion many more times before I'm done.

Yes, definitely better than the Grand Canyon.

Yeah, there are a lot of Mountain Lions in Southern Utah. It's funny because if you read any of the tourist info they always say that Cougars are a rare sight. As much time as I have spent there,I know that is somewhat misleading.Just because "We" don't see them doesn't mean they don't see you. They are pretty thick all over the Dixie National Forest,Zion,Bryce,Cedar Breaks and Strawberry Point. I remember my relatives visting from Scotland one year...all jacked up to be visiti More..

  • A gallon on water weighs about 8 lbs. A 50 gallon aquarium is 400 lbs of water. You are wrong if you think that water cannot move you when you are in it's way.
