A Lauderdale County high school student has been charged with a very unusual case of assault.

"It is out of the ordinary," said Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun. "I don't recall an instance locally, at least not recently where a teacher has been subject to an actual poison."

Calhoun said 17-year-old Ladarius Ju'Earl Yarbrough, of Northeast Lauderdale High School Alternative Unit, has been charged with one felony count of simple assault for allegedly putting whiteboard cleaner in his teacher's drink Monday afternoon.

"The teacher left the room, came back, actually drank some of the drink and realized something was wrong and contacted the school authority, as well as the deputy there on campus," Calhoun said.

The back of a similar bottle of cleaner states that it may be harmful if swallowed because it contains ethanol and alcohol. Authorities say the teacher was very lucky nothing else happened.

"You know, this teacher could have been seriously injured had he ingested enough of this particular chemical," said Calhoun.

The teen is being held at the Lauderdale County Detention Facility on a $5,000 bond.

"The teacher did not require any medical attention and it's my understanding that the teacher continued to, resumed their duties at the the school," said the chief deputy.

Calhoun says this case will be presented to the grand jury in March. Yarbrough could face up to five years in prison and a $1,000 fine.
