Probably Sunday morning at 5am. I've never seen an Autobahn that empty in my life.

Germany is the unique country where there is no speed limitation on highways.

@wadpro
That is absolutely not true.
There are many with speed limits, or partially with a speed limit.

@wadpro only a few sections are unlimited, mostly the straight sections

@BeefSister About 6000km, which is approximately half of the total Autobahn network, to be precise. And there are lots of curvy sections without a speed limit, e.g. the A70, and then there are lots of straight sections with a speed limit.

@litebyte
True, much of the Autobahn network has speed limits. As low in places as 100 km/h. On the other hand there are plenty of stretches with no limit at all.

So what happens when a 100 MPH car is on the left lane passing a 80 MPH car on the right lane... and then this guy comes in at 180 MPH.

Not much of a problem.
As a NL (Nur links) driver you know you are a just a guest there on the left lane.

@jorge pugliese That's the biggest risk at those speeds. The worst is when one truck is passing another truck but is only going 4 miles an hour faster during the overtake. The process takes a long time while a car traveling at 180mph is covering 260 feet per second. You've got to have a very good braking set up before going that fast. I was in Germany when the wall came down and for the first few months it was carnage on the roads. The cars from the east were so underpowered they just couldn't g More..

@PootiesDaddy No. The biggest risk is when somebody pulls out to overtake and umderestimates your speed, or simply does not see you coming. Some morons even change to the left lane without any apparent reason. Therefore, I never drive faster than 200kph when there is any traffic on the right lane. On a 3 lane highway, it is better leave one lane empty between yourself and the slower traffic if you go faster than 200kph.

@wawa17 Me thinks people calling others morons whilst spelling 'underestimates' with more than one 'm' is himself, a moron.

@PootiesDaddy I had a typo in a 60 word comment I typed on a touchscreen? That certainly makes me a moron.
Go fuck yourself, asshole.

a wind gust, a bridge pier, good bye world. I don“t think anyone should drive that fast, do it on a racetrack, but not on the Autobahn.

With 'drive right' laws
With properly designed and built roadways
With properly trained drivers
With damned good brakes
This is all possible!

@wawa17 I wonder if m5 is actually capable of handling these speeds and be stable. Would the engine overheat? How well in general these cars do at high speeds?
Does America have any cars that are capable of handling these speeds on autobahn?

@DazedConfused1969 Not particularly... I'll choose driving 60 mph on a curvy back road over driving 180 mph in a straight line any day.

How do you ever go 55 after driving that fast. It would seem like a complete crawl.

Been there. My '63 Pontiac did 120mph with total ease (I never went faster, didn't fully trust my tires). I drove it that fast only a couple times on a flawless, widely divided highway with perfect visibility for miles and with no traffic. It does change your perception. It was actually difficult to keep to the speed limit afterwards; it seemed much too slow.
