Very Confusing Intersection

The local authorities in Erfurt (Germany) modified a once fully functioning intersection into a confusing roundabout. To save costs, they ignored the obligatory central island. Some white lines on the ground should do the same job right? What a genius.

Enjoy. This video was taken over the course of only 1 hour (Not by me though)

  • Roundabouts can actually be alot better than traffic lights in most places. Drivers just have to be courteous.

  • Its only confusing if you're a retard and don't know how a roundabout works, do they really need the central island to force them to drive in the lanes?? If so it wouldn't be a good idea for them to come to the UK!

    • Given that the main point of a roundabout is to take the speed out of intersecting traffic it seems kind of stupid to have a roundabout that allows you to drive straight through it, as that allows the risky driving that it was build to prevent.

    • So in others words you're saying is that people who may have never lived where there were"roundabouts"and have never seen one or had to utilize one, are "retards".

What a kind thing to say. You're special.

    • So what you're saying is that in the USA there are NO roundabouts ?!?!
the retards that don't know how to signal in a roundabout, like the ones in my country.

    • No. I did not say in the U.S. there were NO roundabouts though they are not a common traffic pattern. So one may live many places in the U.S. and never have the opportunity to either see or experience one. That's why I said "people who may have never lived where there were"roundabouts"..."

  • Blame the British for the proliferation of roundabouts in Germany. Our garrison there has used them in the camp grounds for years and now the German authorities are using them on public roads. It's confusing the locals as this is a relatively new method of traffic control at a junction for them. 10 years ago, there were none. Now they're everywhere.

    • not quite right.. we had many of them after the war then we replaced them with traffic light controlled intersections and roundabouts got more or less forgotten.. now we replace the traffic lights in some parts with roundabouts again.. i personally favor the traffic lights though as many drivers obviously dont know how to drive around a round about lol

  • Roundabouts are rather rare in rural areas in Germany.

  • It would be confusing if you were used to that particular intersection being a normal intersection then one day it suddenly is a roundabout. I would probably drive straight through it the first time and not notice the painted lines until I was on top of it.

  • the roundabout sign is there, so its just stupidity and not paying attention that causes the problem. again. (and of course people tend to drive from instinct at places they drive frequently, so changing rules becomes dangerous)i'm sure they will build the middle though

  • A roundabout is not confusing. It's safer than an intersection.

Of course you need to make it obvious that it actually is a roundabout and not an intersection.

  • You know, the Germans are pretty clever as a rule. I suspect you will see a fountain, or an island show up. Probably right after someone sues the city claiming that caused their horrific accident. The settlement and the fountain are probably around the same cost.

    • On the german news magazine "Spiegel" it said this afternoon (tuesday, 13th) that the city of Erfurt started building the usual "island" in the middle of the circle :-)

  • they do say that junctions where you have to think are usually safer, it'd be interesting to see the 'counter-video' where the acccidents are recorded, be a good comparsion

  • Of course we know what roundabouts are in germany. But the thing is, that these people just didn't realize their usual intersection has turned into a roundabout. I love the guys driving straight through it. They never even realized it :D

PS: YEAH, my first featured video :D

  • Roundabouts are great if people would pay attention and take their time going through them. In the case of this video the lack of a center island is going to be a problem. People are continuing to go straight ignoring the painted circle and speed still seems to be a factor. Done properly it may actually become effective.
