A homeowner captured a thief on surveillance tape stealing a delivery package from outside his Rittenhouse Square home.

A Philadelphia man, sick and tired of having delivery packages stolen from outside his home, has gone high-tech in an attempt to capture the thief.

It seems that as soon as the mailman and delivery drivers leave packages on Waverly Street, they disappear.

Homeowner Aaron Maass, who captured the thief on tape, has had 3 packages stolen from outside his home in the past 2 weeks.

"I thought can we capture this guy on video? And sure enough, it happens," Maass explained.

In one case, the thief tried pulling the package out through the gate.

When that failed, he left, but returned a minute later with a broom. He used the broom to pop the delivery box into his hands and fled.

"In broad daylight, afternoon, in the middle of a work-week, he pulls the package right through the gate and walks away," Maass said.

Waverly Street neighbors said all sorts of deliveries, including mail, dry cleaning and bicycles have disappeared from outside their homes.

"Anything that's left by UPS, FedEx, think about all the things that you need to have delivered," neighbor Jane Mackie said.

To keep the thief from reaching between bars, some residents have installed wire mesh.

But with more and more people getting home deliveries after ordering online, neighbors say thieves like this one have more targets than ever.

"You can't have it delivered at work and a lot of people, so what do you do?" Mackie said.

Maass says he can replace the packages stolen from him, but he fears the thief, if he's not caught, could soon steal something a lot more precious -- medications, a birth certificate, or even someone's identity.

"If it's a bigger problem than just something isolated to this street, this block … maybe we can head it off at the pass," Maass said.
