Hiroshima survivors speak at nuclear remembrance

On the 5th of August, just after the exact anniversary of the nuclear
bombing of Hiroshima, two Hibakusha, or survivors of this atomic bomb
spoke at the annual DC vigil on this anniversary.

This year, the vigil was held near the Martin Luther King Jr memorial instead of the Lincoln Memorial.

Both of the Hibakusha recounted their experience as children or
teenagers at the time of the bombing. They spoke of the the incredible
amount of damage and suffering caused by this single bomb, a "small"
nuke by later standards. It must be remembered that in no way were those
who were children at the time of the bombings in any way responsible
for the war.

During the introductions, there was mention of nuclear reactors and the
mess they made at Fukashima after the tsunami. I was later told that
some of the the Hibakusha had warned Japanese politicians and industry
not to invite anything nuclear back to Japan but were ignored.

  • Was the only way to end the war. No one has any regrets except the Japanese who regret the fact their atrocities were documented more than anything else.

    • @fotoman4u2 AGREED
Japanese were horrible and capitalized on human torture and atrocities throughout the war.

    • @Fire37Rescue Exactly my friend, and if we had invaded, there would have been more than a million Japanese deaths.

    • @Fire37Rescue It's like the US was in Iraq: the Japanese GOVERNMENT and some of their soldiers committed atrocities.

Under the logic of Hiroshima, Iraqi resistance fighters could have detonated suicide bombs in packed shopping malls to punish any Americans for George W Bush-no difference except smaller bombs and no nasty delayed effects from radiation.

    • @Fire37Rescue My father was a medic in WWII, and he told me this story: The US accused the Japanese of roasting babies on bayonets over camp fires, the Japanese said the same of the Americans. In both cases, the stories were false. The Japanese military DID shoot at medics, something I am reminded of every time police target protesters's medics for beatings.

  • lol
Serves you bastards right. How about Unit 731, the Japanese unit which undertook lethal human experimentation on living humans like vivisection. Next time, try not cowardly attacking the USA. Fucking hypocrites, next time try protesting your own Uncle Tojo. You called down the thunder and then you got it! Cry me a Tsunami.

  • They held this in DC? I wonder who will be speaking at the Pearl Harbor or Rape of Nan King vigil in Tokyo?

    • @ODIN Please don't blame people who had no vote and no control over the government for the behavior of war criminals in power. That's like blaming a child in Anacostia for George W Bush in Iraq

    • @1812 Because of morality and common sense. There is no moral value in denouncing crimes for which we are not responsible. On the other hand, we have a duty to recognize and remember our own crimes because it's the first step in ensuring that we never do them again.

    • @ubdumb AGAIN, that was the fault of an unelected dictatorial regime, NOT the general public in Japan, who got no say in anything at that time. There's a big difference between executing war criminals and bombing the whole city just to get at them. They didn't put Tojo and all his political and industrialist buddies on a uninhabited island and then nuke that, did they now?

Also, the nukes kept killing after the war was long over, thanks to radiation. Some of those who died of cancer were not ev More..
