The A-10 Warthog
Part of channel(s): Afghanistan (current event)

Correspondent Josh Bernstein introduces you to the A-10 Warthog. The
Warthog was designed to provide close air support for ground forces.
Basically it's a tank buster. The aircraft's most powerful weapon is a
nineteen foot long 30mm canon that’s capable of firing up to 4-thousand
rounds per minute. Each round is eleven inches long, weighs more than
one-point-five pounds and is capable of ripping right through a tank.

"to deliver a blistering barrage of 30 *caliber* rounds."

Wrong. It is 30mm, not 30 cal.

  • I was talking to a A-10 pilot at a airshow, and he said he wouldn't fly anything else into a hot area

    • @j_ramone Ask the same question to a apache pilot, F18 pilot and the list goes on...

    • @EMAG-K
This man in particular seemed pretty sold on how much abuse it could take and still get him home.

    • @j_ramone I remember one getting back to base with only one wing.
Might have been the first Iraq war, Gulf war or whatever

    • @EMAG-K That was an F15 that had a wing ripped off in Israeli Air Force training. Landed fine with one wing...

The A10 is durable like the Apache. They can have big holes blown open and still function. You're probably thinking about that photo of the A10 with the big hole right through the wing.

  • Its a damn ugly bird, but it ooozes character and is devestating to the enemy! I wonder how long they will stay in service because the air frames must be getting kinda old.

  • I don't understand why people constantly call the A-10 ugly. I think it's quite beautiful.

  • Only plane with manual system if the hydraulics are out. I believe it's the only plane in inventory that's not fly by wire. Be a sad day indeed when these planes are put on the shelf. Uav's are taking over

  • I was on a school exchange visit as a kid in Chalfont PA. I was really into planes at the time (1991) and there was a base nearby where these bad boys were based at - anybody got any further info?

  • I think DOD fucked up years ago when they decided to get rid of the A-10.. THANK GOD they haven't yet!! Loved hearing the sound of that plane in Irag and Afghan!!!! We used to have the in my city with the Air National Guard but they got moved several years ago. They are right, it is THE BEST close air support airplane we got! Personally....I think they need to take afew BILLION for the f-35 project and revamp the A-10 so it'll be around for another 30 years!! It's a simple but very effecti More..

    • @RugOutFromUnderYou: yeah it's like freaking hard to learn. There I was thinking it would be a "simulator", but it was a real SIMULATOR. Never even managed to take off properly.
