My grandad got conscripted to fight for TWO armies in WWI, first the Polish then the Russian armies, being a healthy Ukrainian farmboy was a curse at the time.
Don't know if he ever killed anyone, he never spoke much at all about actual combat (except when his night terrors woke him -- and the entire house) but I know he chucked his Mosin Nagant and booked it to to the States then Canada when the Russian Revolution gave him enough elbow room to bolt.

I can only assume he HAD TO do some killing, though maybe not, after learning this, a more kind, gentle grandfather a child could never ask for.
I have some old brown photos of him and my great uncle (KIA) posing with their comrades after a battle, holding up war trophies, Mausers and Lugers and those old German helmets with the horn bolts on the top-sides.
Not many happy faces in those old pics, mostly looks of pure exhaustion and relief.

BS....I knew a veteran of WWII who fought in France and he told me stories how special GI groups was sent out to kill all the SS soldiers they came across,this after the massacres the SS storm troopers did to civilians and prisoners.%2 kill rate is BS during a firefight its kill or be killed.

@gizmo8 I agree, I've heard this theory before(not as low as 2% that's retarded) but I've just never felt comfortable with it. It was even put forward in talks about the American Civil War, saying only a fraction of troops fired to kill and I'm sure some didn't but once you look at the casualties there's no way only 2% shot to kill, then or WW2.

Hackworth says the guy, whom he personally met on many occasions, was a complete fraud only interested in the income his many books produced. If you are being charged by an enemy force, you will aim to kill for the mere sake of self preservation. All those vids of stacks of dead bodies on battle fields across the world proves that.

@DirtyUncleBerty The program I saw was great. The father was investigating what happened to his son who had died in combat. He then went back and studied old cases of the same issue. He found there were cases going back to the days of muzzle loading rifles being discarded by deserters. These rifles had been multiple-loaded but never fired. @DirtyUncleBerty ... but the interesting thing was the difference that target shooting had. In WWII we were all using static targets of the enemy. Then for Vietnam the targets were "pop-up" and always of the enemy. This had a much better result in terms of combat. These soldiers were trained to react when something appeared ... but it was always the enemy. This led to a shoot/kill ratio of 50,000 to 1. ie 1 bullet hit for each 50,000 fired.
