Transformer Moving 1960

moving a 200 ton Crompton Parkinson Transformer from Hayes in Middlesex to Iver, Buckinghamshire a distance of about 40 miles - a days march apparently... using a specialist firm of Heavy Machine Movers with a custom Low-loader. Evocative scenes of yester-year abound in this vignette accompanied by a dry sardonic narrative from a rather jaded driver!

enjoy.

  • Based on the cars. I'm guessing early 60's.
Contrast the clipped tones and careful enunciation of the BBC narrator with the informal and chatty slang of the driver. That's when the class divide was more like the Grand Canyon.

  • Again, TC, you have put me in peace with yesterday - if only for 9 minutes. It ended too soon, and I am craving more "yesterday"

  • I wonder if that transformer is still there? Looks like it went to the big substation off A4007 just east of M25, east of Iver Heath.

  • Hahaha Pickfords move everything!!
Hayes is not that far from Iver (Slough) more like 10-12 miles. They came up through the M4, off at Slough Central, through the three tuns, up the Farnham Road (past me nans house) up Farnham Common to the M40 and east towards Iver.

I have just spoken to my Nan and she remember this well. She was stood on the main road watching it go past, so there is a chance she was on this vid!!
Thank you very much @thecleaner001!!! gonna show her later!

    Also bit of backgr More..
