It is worth noting, though, that Lugar didn't lose because of the Tea Party. He lost by 20 points, and only about 1 in 5 voters in the primary expressed concern for any Tea Party issues. Most people simply felt that Lugar was disconnected with Indiana, to which Lugar responded by trotting out a lot of his Washington buddies to say what a statesman Lugar is, which only reinforced that Lugar was more in touch with Washington insiders than with people in In More..

His primary opponent, Richard Murdock, identified strongly with the tea party. So even if they didn't 'identify' with the tea party, they nominated someone who does!
