(CBS/AP) The commander of U.S. forces in the Mideast tried to reassure worried lawmakers Wednesday that there will be an orderly withdrawal of troops from the war in Afghanistan - not a rush for the exits starting July next year.

At a Senate hearing, Republican lawmakers questioned President Barack Obama's plan to start withdrawal of U.S. forces in July 2011. Senators complained that Afghans see that as the date they will be abandoned by the U.S.

"We are sounding an uncertain trumpet" about America's commitment to Afghanistan, said Republican Arizona Sen. John McCain.

Gen. David Petraeus said setting the July date was meant partly to pressure the Afghan government to work harder to provide services and reduce corruption, crucial to the military effort to defeat the insurgents.

Seated next to Petraeus, U.S. Department of Defense under secretary Michele Flournoy said Mr. Obama hasn't set a timeline for exactly how many troops will come home at any given point because the president believes that will depend on progress in the war.

Flournoy said the expectation is that the there will, indeed, be enough progress against the insurgency by next July to begin "a responsible drawdown," but that the actual numbers and pace will be determined by how it's going.

Later, Defense Secretary Robert Gates challenged what he said was an overly negative "narrative" that has circulated among officials and the media in Washington in the last week, insisting at a Senate budget hearing that progress is being made in Afghanistan.

  • We invested enough blood and money into Afghanistan, if they dont step up to the plate than we should pull out as fast as possible. Our soldiers have given everything they could to help them but in the end it is the Afghans who need to want it.

The stories coming from Afghanistan doesnt look good and sadly I dont see much changing by next year. No more American families should have to bury their sons or daughters knowing that country will remain a shithole. Lets face it how many here really be More..

    • I think it will be a slooooooow withdrawl. I read all the bad stories too. But I feel certain this is the right thing to do. The Afghans MUST step up. It's THEIR country. Gradually yes, but they must not expect to lean on us, and the blood of our boys, forever. I think we can "do an Iraq" in Afghanistan, although I think it will take longer.

I am looking forward to the Afghans taking more and more responsibility. Further on, I look forward to the point where we're just doing More..

  • I think any yank here would be really foolish to attack Petraeus. Petraeus is in the military, and such what flexibility he has is with in that context. He fought a hard campaign leading the 101st airbourne in Iraq. His operations in Mosul were bolder than many, he drove most of his opponents from that region in 03. He then swiftly saw the need to fire up the economy, and used the resources directly available to him to begin rebuilding (notably hospitals/education facilities) and paying wages to More..

  • Excuse me if I wrong.

But we didn't go into Afghanistan to Nation build.

We went in to kick some Taliban ass. Right?

So why are we pulling out? Are we done kicking ass?

  • Deja Vu, another Viet Nam retreat because of politicians and political correctness as with the ROE (rules of engagement).

    • Whats victory for you in Afghanistan? To me we did all we could, we stomped a mudhole in there asses and we set the foundation for them to restart if they want it.

    • Having been in Viet Nam it is a long and unnecessary story to tell. I know we did what we could under the restrictions (ROE) we had but the main concern is how it will be portrayed for years to come. I am very proud of our military personell and the job they have done in Iraq and Afghanistan but I don't want them to be the brunt of defeat jokes for the next 40 years. I also believe we are leaving for political reasons and you can be assured I feel it when one of our military gets killed or wound More..

    • we are leaving for political reasons and you can bet your ass we went into them for political reasons and or regime change. no ones saying the soldiers did a bad job. i think what we're saying is the two wars( why ami calling them wars? vietnam wasn't even a war?) are completely useless and went into them haphazardly.

  • Petraeus is a horses ass. I prefer a general to be like "Stormin' Norman" Schwarzkopf

Petraeus is a weak pencil pusher.

    • His style is not Schwarzkopf, but his actions are. It was he who crushed the insurgency in Iraq, with extreme predudice I might add. He comes across as soft spoken and urbane, but he wasn't nice about the way he destroyed the insurgents in Iraq. Not nice at all.

    • Stormin' Norman got th hell out of Iraq when Daddy Bush ordered him to get out. So how does that make him any different from Petraeus who is doing the same thing, which is following orders.
