Huge Part of Glacier Slides into Sea, Causes Enormous Wave On Greenland Coast
July 29, 2012
A group of people traveling along the coast of Greenland witnessed nature in full force earlier this month, when a large chunk of ice fell off of a glacier and triggered a giant wave that came in very close contact with their boat.

Jens Møller, the video uploader, explains he accompanied his uncle and an Australian tourist on a tour of the coast near the town of Ilulissat. He says, “The beautiful scenery was amazing, but the nature doesn’t care about anyone. That day almost became our last day.”

This is a repost and quite possibly a refeature.
Not that it's a bad video. It's just that it's not news

@MrFailAlot and and and :
Rule of thumb is to stay
at a distance twice the above-water height of the ice. But this is a BIG
calving event and the other rule of thumb kicks in: have the motor
idling.
For these waves, the correct response is to turn and flee. Regular
sea swells are best navigated head-on but these splashes ("seiche" is
the actual term) dissipate quickly as they radiate outward from a
central point. You can essentially outrun the worst of it, and when it
finally More..

@NameUserNot Well now, that's using the fantastic grey matter between your ears. If more people used their noggin like you do, we might actually develop some sort of understanding as a human race.

Nice hearing the more suitable "Wow" rather than the north American "Oh my god!"

@X-Tatic
To be honest "Oh my God" is supposed to be reserved for events of shock and surprise, sometimes danger, way beyond the use for "Wow". Therefore, it should be used much less, but it all got twisted around and was adapted by regular slang. Probably from the stupid empty-headed valley girls in the 80's.

I like the way they keep going away fast even after the wave has died away.
Enough for today. Got laundry to do.
