I was thinking of Dahmer the other day during the hubbub over Henry Gates.
Dahmer is the textbook illustration of why police actually want to check things out if there is a disturbance at your house-- even if you've shown it is your house.
At one point in his gruesome career, Dahmer was having some difficulty persuading one of his guests to sit still long enough to be murdered. Neighbors heard a disturbance and called the police. When police arrived Dahmer acted embarrased, explained that this was his apartment, and confided that he had just had an argument with his boyfriend. The cops, afraid of trodding upon the rights of some gay guy, apologized and departed, leaving Dahmer to finish off the kidnap victim tied to his bed in the next room.
