  • The latest LED bulbs are best but they are overpriced to make sure consumers buy up the huge stock of fluorescents that remain.

    • Wal-Mart has them on clearance where I live. Looks like they removed LED bulbs from the normal spot and are not selling them anymore.

    • The latest like the: - Philips Econic LED 5Watt Light Bulb - costs 20 pounds in the UK, and fluorescents sell for less than a pound. Incandescents were outlawed by EU dictat.

  • I'm done buying the flourescent bulbs. I already broke one in my house, and followed the cleanup procedure on the government's web site. And I probably still have mercury in my carpet.

And they say you can't throw them in the trash because of the mercury so you have to take them in to get recycled. How many people are actually going to do this?

Looks to me like they will be worse for the environment that incandescents. Not to mention the light output ratings on the boxes are a lie.

    • I cleaned up a broken fluorescent with a vacuum cleaner. I subsequently learned that they contain mercury and you should always mop up breakages rather than make the mercury airborne. I wish I'd known that earlier.

    • I hear you. As soon as broke mine, I turned on the central air system and opened the doors and windows, to air it out. Then I got on the EPA's web site and it says if the central air system is on, turn it off! Wonderful.

    • I agree. I think most people are just putting them in the trash and they are ending up at the local landfill. It is unconscionable that the fools in congress who probably have never changed a light bulb are making these kinds of decisions.

      From energydtar.gov:

If your state or local environmental regulatory agency permits you to put used or broken CFLs in the garbage, seal the bulb in two plastic bags and put it into the outside trash, or other protected outside location, for the next schedule More..

    • Those new CFL's will be the biggest goverment blunder in history when all that mercury starts leeching into the ground water. Most people will just throw them away not recycle them.

    • All that and if the broken pieces touch any clothing you're supposed to throw that clothing away, so I threw away my duffle bag that some of it landed on. And whatever you do, don't let it touch your skin!

  • its now illegal to produce these light bulbs in the uk , but its not illegal to sell them, and when you see how much more energy it takes to produce one of these new low energy lightbulbs, and how much more it takes to recycle it when its blown,, i think they have got it all wrong

  • This product is like Ethanol, it's worse that the product it's trying to replace, to the environment.

  • The lighting industry is under attack. I own commercial buildings. Many and I mean many 4' and 8 ' florescent fixtures. They are or were called T12, now you cant buy the fixtures. You can buy the ballasts, and the bulbs, but at about twice or triple the dollar amount.
Now the replacement is called the T8. They freaking suck. They do not put out the lumen's as the T12.
The difference is 1 1/4" at 40 watts, to 1' at 32 watts. Plus they have a pink color to them.
Doesnt sound like much until y More..

    • You should be shopping at a quality electrical supply wholesaler. I worked in electrical wholesale for almost 10 years and learned alot about flourescent lighting. You need to ask for "daylight" bulbs...they put out a brighter, whiter light than your standard bulb you purchase at the local hardware store. The downside is they cost about $1.50 more per bulb. BUT, of you have the need for as many bulbs and ballasts as you say you do, both the 2 major manufacturers, Syvlanvia, and Philips More..

  • I tried the florescent bulbs. I have two in my house. They are dim and make your house look like a doctors office. You can't read by them at all. Give me incandescent any day.

    • I had at one time replaced all of my old bulbs with these maybe 5 years ago (about 18 bulbs)? I only have one still working. The rest burnt themselves out as fast as the regular bulbs. I'm back to using regular bulbs. I'd say three of those bulbs didn't make it past the first two months.

It's anecdotal of course, so take it for what it's worth... but I've had some personal experience with them... I'd rather use candles.

  • I've been thinking I should stockpile a few thousand of these and sell them for a profit once they are off the shelves. I've known about this for a long time. Its amazing people are just finding out about this.

  • Let ME, the consumer, make the choice. The government has no business dictating the kind of bulb I want to buy.

  • Yeah, I hate these damned dim florescents too so I bought as many incandescents as I found to stock up. 100, 200 & 300 watt'rs, some floodlites and some 3-ways. I also learned that if you want bright incandescents, you can find them in the 'industrial' area of hardware stores. Ignore the electrical area. Many specialists/hobbyists need extremely bright light for detail work. In my home, I need six florescents for every incandescent I replaced and it's still too damn dark. And yeah, the More..

    • LED is definately the way to go. BUT!

Yeah damn that whole electricty thing too! You really don't need it to survive, Man went without it for thousands of years!

You SHOULD save the typewriters. Especially the old mechanical ones, they don't use any electricity to begin with. Win/Win!

Actually, come to think of it, wouldn't it actually be a conservative's dream to live like it was back in the 1700's? I mean come on!!!! I'm ready for it.... I'm good with it.... as long as I can k More..
