  • If I was to take a guess, I'd say it wasn't the cell phone but rather the fact that he got back in his car, possibly sliding around on fabric seats, then got out, then eventually touched metal again while pumping gas and created a static discharge. If you are pumping gas and get back in your car, you have to be aware that you should discharge yourself on metal AWAY FROM petroleum fumes.
There is a reason they ground even small planes to the fuel truck when fueling them up. If you watch closel More..

    • @Jersey Good on you for informing everyone. It's just best to not get back in your vehicle while you're pumping gas. People don't realize that gasoline VAPORS are what ignite, the stuff you can't see.

    • @Pothead420 It's easy to forget, but when things go up in flames, all they know is shit is on fire and that really sucks. No matter where you are from or what color you are, a fire is a fire and a burn is a burn.

  • This was static charge, the guy build up charge when he rubbed against his seat while stepping out of the car.
The charge had no time to flow off through his shoes and relative bad conducting floor he was standing on.
It discharged a spark right in to the explosive fume cloud coming from the tank when he grabbed the fuel pistol to switch it off.

In the Netherlands we have to hold the fuel pistol during the whole filling process just for this reason.
This is a real issue during our relative More..

  • Here we go AGAIN. There is and has never been any proof that mobile phones cause fire at petrol stations. It's more likely, as has been suggested by others here, that it was static discharge caused by wearing cheap polyester shirts and suits, sandals with no socks and women passengers with nylon face coverings.

  • cell phone had nothing to do with it. his big fluffy shirt build up static when he got in and out of the car/. first thing he touched besides himself was the gas pump. he made a spark from static and boom it went. Women usually cause fires in the fashion with their wool coats

  • Thats how its done. I pulled up at a store one morning and an elderly man had went to start his truck and it backfired through the carb and caught fire and the oil soaked insulation under the hood was burning and he got confused and didn't know what to do. I grabbed a fire extinguisher off a pole and put it out for him. The kid working in the store called the fire dept but never offered any help before i just happened to pull up at the right time.

  • There's no way a mobile phone would ignite petrol.

  • Hell, static is biggest cause for spontaneous ignition at pumps. Probably not using grounded pumps in the year 700(Iranian time).

  • Had it been I at the station standing next to the lone fire extinguisher?

That motherfucking place and the resulting exploding fireball would have been visible for miles as I drove away yelling "get me and my fuckin ass the FUCK outta here motherfucka".

Not really that bad you know.

It's gas I really worry about as it tends to explode like an bomb (gas vapor not USA gas) diesel is also quite hard to set a light.

  • Woah, a class B fire and they're chasing the dragon with a tiny CO2 extinguisher (that would be ok for a few cups full of petrol) but really, no foam in a petrol station?
