Raw Video: Officer Hit By Truck

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A Pleasant View officer is thanking a higher power after only suffering a minor injury following a nasty crash last month.

On Dec. 17, Officer Todd Nelson pulled over a car for speeding on Highway 41 in Cheatham County.

Several cars swerved to avoid hitting him, but it appears when a pick-up truck driver tried to do that, he struck an oncoming car and then the officer.

The truck driver and others stopped to help the hurt officer.

"I was hurting. My chest was impacted by the vehicle, my whole front body. It threw me," said Nelson.

Nelson was rushed to the hospital by helicopter but escaped the nasty crash with only a swollen ankle and no broken bones or internal injuries.

"God did everything in this instant. He saved my life," said Nelson.

Nelson said this should be a reminder that when drivers see blue lights, especially on a two-lane road, to slow down or stop.

"If there's not anywhere to move around the officer, they need to stop and wait for us to get done with what we need to do," said Nelson.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash. The driver who hit Nelson has not been charged.

  • Very Lucky Officer

  • Yes very lucky, but he should have conducted the traffic stop from the passenger side window on a two lane road like that. Alert motorists were veering over the double yellow lines to avoid him. All it takes is one distracted driver. Glad he's alright.

  • Wow. Glad he didn't get crushed.

Why do they stand in the highway like that? Seems like there's plenty of room on the shoulder to stay OFF of it.

Hope he thought better of that ticket he was about to give Ms. Samaritan...She deserves at least that.
