THE GRATE DEBATE

-Philosophy v science: which can answer the big questions of life?Philosopher Julian Baggini fears that, as we learn more and more about the universe, scientists are becoming increasingly determined to stamp their mark on other disciplines. Here, he challenges theoretical physicist Lawrence Krauss over 'mission creep' among his peers

Does philosophy or science have all the big answers?Julian Baggini No one who has understood even a fraction of what science has told us about the universe can fail to be in awe of both the cosmos and of science. When physics

  • I don't see why science and philosophy are supposed to be adversaries at all. Science could well be defined as a form of philosophy. In fact, there is a whole field of philosophy trying to define what is scientific.

Philosophy is simply to think logically about the facts. There is nothing stopping a philosopher from finding out the facts, by the means he has decided are best for the job, and that is basically what science is. In one sense scientists could be viewed as the fact finders, and phi More..

    • @wellybub when i read this article the word HYPOTHESIS POPPED into my head ,i know philosophy is much deeper than just question asking but how can you have science with out it ? Forgive me im no scholar

    • @wellybub Well said, you address the exact same thing that came to my mind when I first read the title, I completely agree.

I think most people doing an academic degree will quickly realise that this is the case. I remember doing a course on research methology once as part of my degree and we had to study some branches of philosophy in order to realise what can be proven and what can not, what can be known and what can't etc.

So no, philosophy and science don't oppose eachother, on the contra More..

Cheers brother, some great posts by you. Keep 'em coming and I promise, I'll keep commenting, I'm far better at it than posting.

I could kiss him for all he's taught us, despite the gag reflex....

  • Were you to ask Plato sitting in a cave, he would tell you that ultimately nothing is knowable to humans.
We humans are certain we know facts, but everything ultimately is based on a the universe each of us creates inside our brain.
In other words, we know nothing about the universe itself, whatever the hell it actually is.

  • This just further proves to me that philosophers are people who just spew words, words and more words. They play games with words. They waste their intellect on trying to out-intellect others, with waste-of-time verbage.

The old joke is, "you are as much use as a philosophy degree". Indeed its a useless waste of time.

To compare the worth of science to philosophy is as much a useless waste of time as philosophy itself.

    Nuff said.

  • nonsense.try reading history without hegel.try understanding being without heidegger.try understanding the philosophy of science without binswanger..moreover look at the role accident plays in the understanding of science.what does it mean to be free is more a preoccupation of philosophy than a pursuit of absolute truth etc.conceptual analysis is the name of the game.
