The former Liberal Democrat leader urged British troops to "get out" of Afghanistan as soon as possible, to avoid "wasting" any more lives.
He said: "The only outcome of staying longer is more deaths for no purpose; most of them now caused not by the enemy in front of our troops, but by the enemy among them."
Writing in The Times he cited the statistic that so far this year 61 coalition soldiers have been killed by members of the Afghan National Army or Police- 14 of them have been British.
Last month a British Army commander warned that the threat to British troops posed by their Afghan allies has increased and more attacks can be expected.
Brigadier Doug Chalmers said that the rise in insider attacks is partly “statistical,” suggesting that a certain percentage of the Afghan forces will always be unreliable.

The latest victim, Captain Walter Barrie, 41, was shot dead on Remembrance Sunday by an Afghan soldier during a football match between British and Afghan forces.
Captain Barrie from, The Royal Scots Borderers, 1st Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland was flown back to the UK yesterday.
The 11 year Afghanistan conflict has cost 438 British lives.
Britain will end the combat mission at the end of 2014, and could withdraw as many as 4,000 of its 9,000 troops next year.
Lord Ashdown (Jeff Gilbert)
But Lord Ashdown questioned whether that was soon enough. He said: "It is not worth wasting one more life in Afghanistan.
"All that we can achieve has now been achieved.
"All that we might have achieved if we had done things differently, has been lost.
"The only rational policy now is to leave quickly, in good order and in the company of our allies."
Lord Ashdown conceded that British forces have succeeded in driving out al-Qaeda, the main reason behind the conflict, but he said:
"In almost all the other tasks we set ourselves, especially the establishment of a sustainable state, we have failed and lost."

Unfirtunately there won't be an end, you can't change the mindset of religious fanatics. When our forces leave there will probably be a civil war and a change in the ruling regime. I don't like to think that any coalition lives have been wasted in Afghanistan but I also don't want any more to die if it won't change anything.
I think Paddy Ashdown has earned his right to speak on military issues, he is an ex marine and SBS member.

It was "Call of Obama 2 - Operation Failed Leader" for xbox360 and ps3...
in order to finish the last level it requires the player shove the controller up their ass in order to complete the mission.
It's only just begun...
Obama is a wrecking ball
It's not his fault though. It's the fault of those who voted for him. THEY are to blame...
it's their fault.. not his

Thousands of dead Taliban and All Queerda bodies say otherwise.
Whether the Afghans want to take the opportunity to embrace democracy and the 21st century for that matter, now would be a good time to do so.
Troops will leave on their time table.. when they please, in accordance with the military's battlefield shot-callers.
Afghanistan falls back into control of the terrorists.. their problem.

The "terrorists" we went into Afghanistan after were Saudis. The Taliban had no beef with us. Our full scale invasion of Afghanistan was obviously a huge failure just as was our invasion of Iraq. We did more to build Al Qaeda than Bin Laden ever would have.

@Ithinkthat1 Not seeing the failure in Iraq. Afghanistan was a clusterfuck from day one. It was the pit that that helped break the Soviet Union. I'm still trying to figure out how we walked right into a trap that we helped set up. Are our leaders really that retarded?

Its amazing to me how time forgets all soldiers. Anyone remember how man soldiers died in Northern Ireland. For What? What did it achieve! Ill tell you what NOTHING. Can anyone remember the last soldier who was only 18 blown away by an IRA sniper. Why was he shot down, FOR WHAT????
The exact same applies to Afghanistan. The Taliban and Mujaheddin shall remain long after all the Americans and their cronies have fucked of and have been forgotten.
Anyone that thinks the brave British soldiers shoul More..

Well, we did run Al Qaeda and the Taliban out of there. We did kill a HUGE amount of savages. But you just cannot change such a deeply imbedded culture of abuse, murder, and oppression. It would be like trying to force a heroin addict from using heroin. They are not going to change unless they want to.
The Taliban was decimated. So was Al Qaeda, but they have been coming back with a vengeance since Obummer became da prezadint. Now, thanks to Obummer's foreign policies on the middle east, More..

@Ithinkthat1 This is a war without end.Muslim extremist will not give up trying to kill us, till they reach their goals of an Islamic west. The war in the Afghan is about denying them training grounds. The other war is economic. The west has has lost nothing compared to the 2 world wars we fought,so whats your problem.Better to fight Islam in the east than in our own countries.Draw them in and kill them on their own soil, rather than ours.

His point is we invaded because of 9/11 which was done by Al'Qaeda and now that Bin Laden is dead and Al'Qaeda destroyed in the region(remember Taliban is separate from Al'Qaeda) so what's the point. What he should have said is if we're not going to invade Pakistan(which duh, we're not) then we wont win this war now or later.

Yup Id agree with that. Time to leave. the whole way we went about it in the first place was all wrong. We should have just bombed specific targets of the fucking country of the face of the earth. bombed the people into submission so that they where so scared that they would happily point to the enemy strongholds instead of lying to our faces. That geneva convention is a real bitch sometimes.

It isn't the soldiers fault they have some good fight in them but their government is bullshit and lack the testicle fortitude to stick it out until we have established a viable replacement.
