@Elk Snot Sooooo.....disassemble all cranes (or any structure that might be vulnerable to 80 mph winds for that matter) within a possible 800 mile wide area of high winds, or deal with the few that collapse? I think it would be a small miracle just to clear those open floors of construction debris/tools etc that certainly could have blown out like projectiles into the surrounding area and buildings. There was pretty much just time to leave, which the smart ones did.

i absolutely agree, and i wonder if there might be possible grounds for prosecution here - hazard to the public and property (knowing that a huge storm was headed their way they purposely and wilfully left a f**king 100 ft crane still standing instead of dismantling it!!!).

@-SpectraL Realistically, it would probably take a couple of weeks(?) to dismantle that crane in the right conditions. It sits on a ledge on about the 40th floor, there was a smaller crane that started at ground level and once the building was 40 stories high or so, they built this crane.
Agreed, they should have done something better with it during the storm, like sit the boom at 40 degrees or so and lock it down so it couldn't blow up or down...
