Start of Training for This Year's Gurkha Recruits

Competition to serve as a Gurkha in the British Army is fierce.

Each year more than 11,000 Nepali men apply to join the ranks but only 170 make it through.

This year’s recruits have only been in the UK since January but their training has already begun.

They must complete a 37 week course, longer than the standard 23
weeks other budding soldiers must go through as it includes extra
language tuition.

  • A Canadian Peacekeeper was quoted in this encounter with a modern-day Gurkha soldier.

"We fought alongside the Gurkha for a while. They are all very neat, clean shaven, and extremely polite. I was fascinated by their Kukri, and when I asked one of them if I could examine one, he very courteously unsheathed it and handed it to me. After I looked at it for a few minutes, I handed it back to him. Before he holstered the weapon, he very calmly flitted his thumb with the blade, causing a small More..

  • Another story I'm sure you'll all enjoy...

Tim Bowden, in his book One Crowded Hour about cameraman Neil Davis, tells
about an incident that happened in Borneo during the confrontation between
    Malaysia and Indonesia in 1964.

A group of Gurkhas from Nepal were asked if they would be willing to jump
from transport planes into combat against the Indonesians if the need arose.
The Gurkhas had the right to turn down the request because they had never
been trained as paratroopers. Bowden quotes Davi More..

  • "If a man says he is not afraid of dying, he is either lying or is a Gurkha."
    - Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw

One of my friends family members did a training mission with the Gurkhas. He said they wouldn't stand a chance against them.

  • Crackin troops and the British Army is lucky to have them. Had a Gurkha instuctor many years ago. Their conduct is pretty impeccable and as mentioned here they dont know the meaning of failure, so its no wonder that every enemy they engage are shit scared of them especially those raghead Taliban. Incredibly brave, loyal and selfless. I also know they they are very fond of Karaoke and Elvis Presley.
