The flexible/mooving base is the answer... if they had all been put on solid ground it wouldn't happen....

@radioactiveant Sorry, but it would have happened given enough time on solid ground. That amount of time would be inverse to the difference in the mass of the Earth and the pendulums.

@radioactiveant I forgot which spacecraft it was whose orbital maneuver slowed Jupiter's rotation by about 1/2 second over 30 or maybe it was 50 million years. I'm not doing the math.

@corectmeifiamwrong
All planets involved in the slingshot maneuver have lost a little bit of speed to the spacecraft performing the maneuver.

Each metronome comes to a stop & reverses direction at the top of it’s swing, it transfers energy to the platform. This energy transfers through the platform to each of the other metronomes.
The energy transferred to the platform from each metronome starts out of sync, but the waveforms of the energy interfere with each other, and at the location of each metronome you end up with negative or positive waveforms which in turn have an effect on the interference pattern. This keeps going unti More..

Are you some sort of sonic scientist? That was a good explanation but this isn't my specialty so I'll have to take your word for it.
What happens if they are ALL ticking to a different beat?

Order from chaos. A very good example for harmonic oscillation.
edit: Actually it's coupled oscillation.

The floating table transfer the inertia of those metronomes synchronized at the beginning to the others. The future of humanity is therefore communism.
