Wehad a system like that in Beruit in 83/84. I think it was called "FASTAB" for "Forward Area Survellience and Target Acquisition Battery". It picked up arty, rockets, and mortars in the air and calculated the origin almost immediately. It was all surveyed in and had very accurate data on terrain, so they were able to identify the source before the rounds even impacted. They would relay that coordinates, which were at least 8 digit grids, if not 10, I'm not sure they did't te More..

The rounds self destruct before returning to earth.

Correct. So many revolutions and it self destructs. Your knowledge is recognized.
Did you know RPG rounds do the same, at about 800 meters? Airbursts.

Not appropriate for a tank. We have put 20mm vulcans on Armored vehicles, but there are more powerful and versatile weapons for light armor, like the 25mm chain gun. 20mm don't have adequate range for today's AA needs.

I don't think I'd want to live anywhere closer than 5 km from that thing. What goes up has to come down and there's a lot going up.

@bluedoggg in most cases where these will be set up there will be multiple stations to compensate for uncovered incoming threats...

@bluedoggg
This thing tracks multiple targets at once, more than you would think, and is intergated into a network of other similar or different systems. It prioritizes each incoming round and takes then down in sequence, shifting rapidly as each is destroyed. By networking the systems will delegate targets to others as appropriate to the situation.
The systems are pretty much automatic. They can easily tell incoming from outgoing, and where the round will come down. It can choose which to eng More..

Very interesting in the theory but in the practice for 20 mortars launched, this system will only take 1 or maybe 2

On our ship it is called a Phalanx.
Damn thing will shoot the pieces that are left of whatever it shot if not turned off.
Scary accurate.
