Heart of Coppola: Hearts of Darkness (Apocalypse Now)
Part of channel(s): Movie Scene LL Challenge (promoted)

August 15, 2012 is the 33rd Anniversary of the U.S. premiere of Apocalypse Now, Francis Ford Coppola's adaptation of Joseph Conrad's novella, Heart of Darkness.

Joseph Conrad's story is about a boat captain named Marlow who travels along a river deep into "the heart of an immense darkness" in order to find a man named Kurtz. One of the many themes of Heart of Darkness is the idea that a person can lose their mind the further they travel away from civilization into the unknown.

This theme is paralleled in Apocalypse Now and by Coppola's own journey in completing his most personal film. The documentary, Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse is a compilation of Eleanor Coppola's interviews, on-the-set footage and secret audio recordings of her husband at his most exposed moments. Coppola's many struggles included an unfinished script, Marlon Brando showing up overweight, typhoons destroying entire sets and Martin Sheen having a heart attack during production.

The above cut is a mix of Orson Welles' reading of Heart of Darkness, Apocalypse Now and the documentary Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse.

  • For every one great big budgeted movie that succeeds there is another 10 big budgeted movies that bombs....I rather see the small unknown directors in Europe and Asia make masterpieces with small budgets rather than %95 of the american garbage these days called movies.

  • I heard Sheen went a little nuts after doing this movie. Not sayin he wasn't a little nuts before the movie.

  • One of the best movies of all time. Said it already on an other upload: I dont like the directors cut because there are too many unnecessary scenes. The cheap fucky fucky with the playboy bunnies...cut it out. Just makes a masterpiece shallow.

  • Great film and the full doc is very revealing and insightful, and Francis Ford Coppola was right, filmmaking has exploded away from professionalism and we have every fat girl from Ohio and her mates making beautfiul art now.
But please dont go to youtube for examples, there is nothing but pain and suffering for you there

  • I have to say that, if you come away from Heart of Darkness, and all you got is "wow, you go crazy if you're away from civilization", you missed a great deal of what the book has to say. A gigantic portion of the whole point is missing there.

The more vital aspect of it to take home is that "civilization" is a sham. An illusion to soothe the mind from the pure horror of the real world, which is ever present even in the most civilized place on earth. How "civilization&q More..
