RickBond's cooking - Christmas dinner
Merry Christmas everyone
Started about 6:00 a.m. this morning.
My smoker's water pan has a hole in it, so that's why it's lined with foil.

Good harvest, I know who to ask about growing broccoli.
Im cracking up about your deep frying conditions! I assume it all worked out fine or else it would be 'no transmission...'

Oh, that damn turkey!
We didn't really do a thanksgiving dinner this year. We went elsewhere to a pot luck. Kim's gotta have turkey at LEAST once a year. She made me promise I'd do one for XMAS. The weather was predicted to be bad XMAS day so I thought I'd get out of it. But she just kept saying "FIND A WAY!". So her Dad and I and the boys jury-rigged what you see. I thought for sure the wind gusts would take it down, but it held up. And Kim got her damn turkey!

Good job. Some times it's easier to give em' what they want than deal with the alternative... I battled desperate consumers for cinnamon rolls at the store! Reminded me of a Nat' Lampoons gig.
In all I'm Glad you and your family are good. Thankfully the Myans lack of prediction didn't doom the planet.
Cheers...

It's actually pretty easy. If you get one, there are several LLers who could give you some good advice

Surreal. Cooking outside. Fresh vegetables growing. Kids running around in shorts and tees. And I just came in from freezing my %$@&%$! off where right now the temp is 15 degs - and heading south. Merry ice cubes.
Cheers!
Happy holidays!

You know you live in a beautiful - but cold - area!
Spssssst!!! See the wooden framework I built down the center of the plants? See the blankets on the grass? It just may freeze here and the blankets will be thrown over the Broccoli if it does...
Brrrrrrr!!!

@RickBond "it just MAY freeze" - you are sooooo lucky. :-) On the other hand in July when you are sweltering - but nahhh - let's not go there yet.

those ribs so good they should be illegal :)
We often let some of our broccoli go to flower, then cut off the long stems with the flowers attached & put them in salads, leave them raw, they are really good :)

Really! I've never grown it before this year. But I read that it's bitter if you let it go that far. So we could have picked that and steamed it and it wouldn't be bitter?

@RickBond No its not bitter at all, actually kinda sweet! But we eat it raw!

Huh... I need to read up more on it I guess. I'm glad you made that comment cuz I was under the impression that it's absolutely no good if it starts to flower even a bit.
Thanks, I - once again - learned something from a fellow LLer

@RickBond I was on the way to post about flowers, but i read Barremel's comment and i agree, you can eat them in salad, but when they are still in buds or very young, and make a gratin with the rest of broccoli.

Is that traditional there - do most do it that way?
When I was growing up, that's maybe how we did it. We'd have the nice dinner (only my parents and siblings) and afterwards each of us would get to open a present and I think whatever was in the stockings. Then Christmas morning it was obvious that Santa had come and gone (more presents under the tree, Santa had eaten the cookies we left for him and he had taken whatever we left for his reindeer). We opened the rest of the presen More..

@RickBond Hey hey, sorry I couldn't answer earlier. Was away celebrating the 2nd Christmasday at my parents in law their place. The 2nd day is an official day over here. We see it as if it were the first day. There isn't a difference between the first and second day. Perhaps the Dutch are more practical. So you can go to your parents AND your parents in law without having to choose, hehehehe. I don't have any idea why. For I know, only the mass is different (well at least the Roman Catholic one More..

The ribs look superb! I wouldn't turn down that roast, either. I deep fried a turkey about five years ago and it was pretty good. But it still bugs me how much I spent on the oil. And I'm jealous you can harvest fresh veggies in December.
Merry Christmas!

If you buy peanut oil you can re-use it I think 10 times. You just run it through a filter (I use a paint filter) and re-bottle it. Unfortunately, peanut oil costs more, but in the long run you save $.
I use a LOT of oil (12 gal) when I do a turkey. But it's worth it! When I drop the turkey, the oil temp doesn't decrease much (maybe 25 degrees?) so the turkey is perfect every time.
