F-35A Completes First In-Flight Weapons Release

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif., Oct 17, 2012 – An F-35A conventional takeoff
and landing (CTOL) aircraft completed the first in-flight weapons
release of a 2,000 pound GBU-31 BLU-109 Joint Direct Attack Munition
(JDAM) from a 5th Generation fighter, Oct. 16. The flight was conducted
by U.S. Air Force Maj. Eric "Doc" Schultz. The aircraft, known as AF-1,
jettisoned an instrumented GBU-31 over the China Lake test range from
the left internal weapons bay. The F-35A 5th Generation fighter is
designed to carry a payload of up to 18,000 pounds using 10 weapon
stations. The F-35A features four internal weapon stations located in
two weapon bays to maximize stealth capability. The CTOL aircraft can
also utilize an additional three external weapon stations per wing if
required.

  • Man people are so wrong about this plane. Avionics is America's strong suit. We have planes way beyond the F-35's capabilities in black budget missions. I have to believe that all the bad things said about this plane is disinfo. *Sips dat Jack*

There are always bugs in a new flight system.

      F-22 is no different.

I would hardly call the F-22 "shitty" because of those.

    • @wharris Oh you mean that "it can't fly when it rains" is just a glitch - a small bug ? Or that it tries to kill it's pilots by suffocating them is another small bug ? Or .., or ... It's not a plane it's a way of sucking money from the government hence the people of US. And yes it's a shitty plane.

I've heard of the O2 issue. Last I heard, its solved.

Never heard of the rain issue.

I did, however hear about its kill ratios.... Seems pretty damn effective.

    • @wharris Yea it effectively lost against Russian SU-27 30 years old plane check Google. They had joint training ops. And F-22 has never seen battle (http://www.adn.com/2011/08/13/2014085/big-ticket-f-22-raptor-jet-fighter.html) So how could he have an impressive kill/death ratio ?

A piece of shit that Canada is planning to buy. :p
Really though, why didn't Canada go out and buy the Eurofighter instead? Abit cheaper and more reliable it seems so far.

    • @tai Mai Shu Are you somehow suggesting that Lockheed is a branch of the United States Government? Last time I checked, Lockheed is private company not a country. The US government buys the planes from Lockheed as well as Canada. Do you know anything about procurement processes? Do you know anything about the F-35 project?

Sorry but Lockheed is not a private company. Lockheed is a public company traded under the New York Stock Exchange.

    • @tai Mai Shu It is not a government run company, therefore it is a private company. The owners are the shareholders. What do you not understand?

  • Still not a fan of this plane.

I am a plane buff, and probably should be, but every time I see this plane, all I can think is that this is what a plane, designed by a committee, looks like.

National defense is a fundamental duty of federal government. It's the spending of trillions on porkulus, foreign interventionism, and welfare that's the problem.

  • All this technology and all we're really gonna do is bomb camel riders, cave dwellers and people who don't engage in conventional warfare to make it a viable investment.

A few more fleets of present jets would appear to be a more sound investment rather than stuff like this unless we're gonna fight aliens or Russia/China has aliens they wanna send to the West to play games!

  • BTW, it took over a decade and $400+ billion dollars to get to this point. that combined with astronomically expensive wars is creating wide spread poverty across the US and keeps sinking the economy at an alarming rate. forget recession or depression, ship is going down no matter who wins the election.
