RickBond's Yard - 1
Part of channel(s): Yoursay (promoted), Liveleakers (promoted)

A look around my yard at plants that grow wild here. I have water around 3 sides of my yard, so lots and lots of interesting life forms live here. In 1991, when I moved here, no one wanted to live here because it's so wild, and susceptible to tidal surges. But this is home to me.

Sorry about the crummy camera work; I'm no videographer. But I was also barefoot and wary of stepping on poisonous ants, caterpillars or snakes. If there's enough interest, I'll post more on stuff that lives in a Louisiana swamp.

  • Beautiful place. Most folks who don't live on a waterfront might not realize all the concrete and brick piled there is to prevent your yard from eroding away. How hot is it outside there today? Right now it's 90 degrees F (32 degrees C) in Tennessee.

Hi, John, it's 94F as I type this, and was 90F when I made the video (around 11:30 a.m.). The humidity isn't too bad today.

The broken concrete is called Riprap. The first view is of a major bayou, (probably 400 feet across) and there's some major nautical traffic through there, including hugh tugboats and barges. Yes, the riprap has helped with the erosion.

Well, it's about 98 black bears up here in Canada. Normally, you see 6-8. There must be fifteen on the runway alone. That and they destroyed the tire on my plane.

I guess I should enjoy the weather as I'm not going anywhere soon.

      It's pretty jungly,lol.
All the clearing I did this winter has now grown back. I just took a smoke break and walked around, lifted some boards and sheet metal in hopes of scaring up a snake or two but it's scorching out now at 100degrees F. I may wait till later this week as that tropical storm hits.Things will get active around here then and hopefully get some gator footage from the creek that runs next to my hacienda.Had a young bear hang out for an evening here, tried to get footage More..

  • I love these videos, please post more. do you ever see any of the gators, do they come up on the land? what an interesting place and nice part of the world to live in - Top Shelf stuff.

      TYVM TC!

Yes, there are lots of gators here. In fact the largest I've ever seen (including in zoos) used to hang out just on the other side of the water from where I narrated the Duckweed. They do come up on the land, and occasionally leave me presents: carcasses of Nutria, fish and dogs. I keep a gun handy when they need scaring off (I don't aim for the gator). Last year a small gator got a Nutria, then a larger one took it away, and a larger one still ended up with it. More..

Nope, which is why I got this place so easily - it's protected wetlands; I can't build anything. However, back when the house was built fill dirt was allowed to be hauled in. The house is about 10.5 feet ASL.

This is the LAST place you want to be during a hurricane! I made a video last year of the tidal surge from TS Lee. I was stranded for days, but I prepared for it (beer & generator gas)

Thanks for the nice comment AP!

I figured as much. Still, you've got to have some true grit to ride out a storm at that ASL. That, and plenty of beer. Cheers!

The bayou is sea level. My house is 10.5 feet above sea level. The house flooded once in 2005 (Hurricane Katrina). But the tide goes up to nuisance levels often. Here's what a tropical storm looks like from here:

  • I find the videos that you show of your yard to be interesting and enjoyable, RickBond. If you could get footage of various wildlife that's back there and post it, that would be great. Especially, poisonous creatures and gators.

Thanks Sox. There is an almost endless supply of creatures to video.

One of the most interesting animal encounters I had here was with an Egret last year. Here's a link to the first of 6 videos, if you like:

All the critters in my yard are now hiding from the heat. Even the lizards that cover my yard like a carpet are saying, "Screw this shit! It's too friggen hot out!"
Kids have the day off manana, I'll have them help me make a video (hopefully). I have a shit ton amount of work to do outside.about 7 acres to mow and a million trees to lop.

Yeah, yard work never ends, but I imagine you enjoy it or you wouldn't have so much yard! 3.5 acres here, but I enjoy tending to it.

Oh, and the Avocado you commented about last year... you were correct: it died. Trying a different one this year called "Joey".

Yeah, I'd love to have a guacamole tree here so let me know how it works out.I'd also like some pistachio tree or two because it's one of the few nuts I really enjoy.Figs are getting ready now so I'll make sure to get some of them on film.
I just checked prop records and they say I have 13.7 acres.Of that, only 6-7 acres is cleared. The rest is thick impassable jungle.
