Rolled tatami mats soaked in water overnight.
I'm part of a dojo in NYC where we cut twice a month or so. But the mats we get are brand new, the ones in japan are discards from homes so their consistency is quite denser.
I wouldn't say it is meant to replicate an arm or a leg because there is no bone there. Tameshigiri is basically used to test your technique and cutting angles. It's a lot of fun !

Indeed it is. If your blade angle is off by a little you will get stuck in the target. And the multiple cuts at once that they are practicing are advanced techniques.
Its a lot of fun but takes quite a bit of work.

Check out this fail then. The guy was doing a blind noto and missed, ran the sword right through his arm. Those babies can fuck you up fast. After stitches so it's not terribly graphic, but maybe it'll make ya feel better. :p
