ONONDAGA, N.Y. — Police say a motorcyclist participating in a protest ride against helmet laws in upstate New York died after he flipped over the bike’s handlebars and hit his head on the pavement.
The accident happened Saturday afternoon in the town of Onondaga, in central New York near Syracuse.
State troopers tell The Post-Standard of Syracuse that 55-year-old Philip A. Contos of Parish, N.Y., was driving a 1983 Harley Davidson with a group of bikers who were protesting helmet laws by not wearing helmets.
Troopers say Contos hit his brakes and the motorcycle fishtailed. The bike spun out of control, and Contos toppled over the handlebars. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Troopers say Contos would have likely survived if he had been wearing a helmet.

Wear your helmet. If you die or need hospitalization, it's not just your problem, it costs other people as well.
Don't know about other countries, but we pay compulsory 3rd party insurance when we register vehicles, to pay for accident victims hospital and death expenses etc. I don't want to pay for people too stupid to wear a helmet, or use a seatbelt in a car. Both are compulsory here.
It costs me about $600 a year to register my car, $400 of that is insurance for injuries caused on the roa More..

@markatbaysie Good thing in the U.S. of A. where morons are free to be morons, so our society can benefit from the survival of the fittest.

From a governing perspective I can understand the desire to make helmets compulsory - helmets do save lives (there are a million studies, use google), they also significantly lower the cost to taxpayers for lifetime care in the event of things like brain damage, also emergency response, clean up, and so on.
From an individual purview, I get the whole freedom of choice thing too. If you are an adult you should be able to decide what is right for you, just so long as you don't hurt anyone else.

RIP to him. We had all this in the 70's when helmet law was introduced in the UK, but the figures tell their own story - a massive reduction in deaths from motorcycle accidents, and a consequent huge saving on medical costs etc.

Dumbness can be fatal. How ironic died participating in protesting helmet laws due to a motorcycle accident while not wearing a helmet. Don't know if to be sympatatic or to have a big laugh out loud.

If they can "force" you to wear the seat belt in the car, then maybe they should do the same with helmets.

i have not even known that many bikers but i have personally known four who were killed and one who is a paraplegic.
motorcycles are a death trip. trail ride, race on a track but on the road is a killer.

Some would call this 'poetic justice'.
I wonder how his family and riding buddies feel about this unfortunate event? Will it change their perspective at all? Sometimes, when something awful strikes close to home, it causes people to rethink their position.
