WWII bunkers sitting around residential area in Shanghai

The bunker were built in 1930's with the help of German engineers for the war against Japan. They survived WWII and the civil war and still look strong. People complain about inconvenience these concrete barriers cause around their houses but the authorities say they have historic values and huge money is also needed to demolish them.

Authorities say they have historic values - Yeah i would agree, that big chunk of concrete tells a story, from not that long ago which shouldnt be forgotten.

  • They have these kinds of things in Switzerland, you can actually run around underground bunkers and tunnels all over the place over there, pretty bizarre!

  • Good to see a bit of history being preserved by the Chinese goverment. The UK too has a large number of WW2 bunkers and pillboxes in all shapes and sizes scattered everywhere.Theres a pillbox near my home shaped like a mushroom (yes really!) and these were sited near main roads and railway lines for defence. There is also on a farm i frequent underground bunkers etc and would love to get inside there, but its flooded to quite a depth.

  • If the Chinese had built them ... they's have long since fallen to bits.

They lost the knack of building things to last after that bit of a wall they knocked up

    • @Ohforfoxache I still have some happy meal toys that are still holding together after 20 or so years. I think it's the lead that holds it together though.
