A Species Appropriate Raw Diet for Dogs
....just as nature intendedDid you know that historically a dog’s diet was always raw?
It wasn't until the depression of the late 1920's that the traditional meat, bones, offal and table scrap diet fed to dogs for centuries was abandoned when people had no choice but to eat these foods themselves, and instead began to feed dogs with stock and grain-based feed, to which they added extra protein and calcium in the form of what was basically fertiliser meat meal, blood and bone. This was the beginning of the enormous pet-food industry that we know today with grain producers, realising the profits to be made from their waste produce, began what has become the insidious (and damaging to pet health) modern pet food industry of today.
This new pet food was sold as “scientifically formulated” and “good for your pet”, yet the food was mainly cereal based, cooked at very high temperatures and finished with a cocktail of colorants, preservatives and dubious 'vitamins' in an attempt to replace the nutrients lost from the high temperatures used in the processing.
At this point, the pet food manufacturers re-wrote the scientific classification for dogs and started to change public perception by referring to dogs as omnivores, despite their carnassial teeth and lack of large flat molars for grinding up plant matter. The manufacturers went further; they started sponsoring the nutrition lectures in vet school, teaching student vets that dogs were omnivores. They gave lucrative sales margins to vets who carried their food, and so the corruption of our veterinary professionals began....
Being descendents from wolves, feeding a dog a steady diet of anything that is cooked, canned, dried or ground is simply unnatural for a dog, and over time, doing so puts a strain on the dog's system. Such a chronic strain may often result in any number of the different kinds of health problems from which far too many dogs are suffering today; diseases that are now being referred to as “genetic”.
Yet it was convenient, no more pondering of what to feed that day, everyone loved the idea of simply opening a bag or can. The fast-food industry for dogs was born, and with it began the diet related health crisis of dogs that then swept our western world, dogs started to develop so many diet related illnesses that the veterinary industry boomed, yet still we carried on feeding the same food that was causing the problems in the first place.
This site is intended to give you, the reader, an overview to a more natural way of caring for your dog to provide better health and longevity. We hope it is the first step to a different way of life for both your dog and your family and that you will go on to explore the subject in detail. Knowledge is power, the more informed you are, the better choices you will be able to make for your dog.
We hope you enjoy the journey!

Rawesome: The Story - The Police Raid, June 30th, 2010

I love my animals, but I can't stand when people get on their high-horse about shit. while a raw diet is extremely healthy, it's simply too much effort for almost anyone stick with. as long as you feed your dogs holistic food with no grain/corn etc, they will be properly fit and healthy and their shits will be hard, and less frequent than on any other type of dry food.

@Thunderscratch you know, I think it just depends on what you've fed them for their whole lives. I used to feed my oldest dog purina junk until I knew the difference, but I've fed her strictly holistic food for the last 5 or 6 years (she's 9 now). I guess her body has just gotten used to the holistic food, because a couple of months ago, I ran out of dog food on a holiday monday and couldn't get her regular food, so I just gave both of my dogs a bit of purina until the next day when I could get More..

@85cmorning my last dog was a shepherd/collie mix. i gave her 1.2 kilos of wet food everyday. vets say that shit is bad for dogs. i'm sure it is, but she wouldnt have it any other way cuz she grew up on it. she died of cancer at 12 and half. did the food have anything to do with it? well, to this day, i figure that i'd rather she died eating what she loved. as hard as it was losing her, thats how i see it. let em eat what they like.

@85cmorning Weird!
Same symptoms my dog had once, but it was from an accidental ingestion of about a teaspoon of antifreeze.
She looked like a shar-pei at it's worst point.

Or you could just feed your dog Origen..... I feed my dog(Shar pei) this food and she looks amazing!! No need to go through all the hassle of preparing a raw diet like this dude, it's very expensive and time consuming.

Yep that's right, I'm telling you now it's the best dry dog food money can buy!! It's won all the awards running for the last 4years.. It's made in Canada and its all made from fresh not frozen meats/fish fruit and vegetables which are all from sustainable sources. I have tried lots of foods over the years even put my dogs on a raw diet before and found it hard work to prepare and very expensive!! My dog is now on Origen adult and I would say IMHO its the best food she has ever bee More..

Best if you avoid the rice it serves no purpose in a dogs diet, just sound great to humans..
Try and put your dog on Origen dry kibble dog food it's better for your dog the giving it rice, it contains 80%meat or fish and 20% vegetables NO GRAIN OR RICE...
My dog is on it and loves it and more importantly looks awesome....

It's Orijen, great stuff,my dog gets the six wild whole fish blend.
Plus raw meat and bones when I have it.
I read somewhere that it's not good to mix raw meat with kibble though, forget why exactly, something to do with a possible bacterial reaction.
Cheers

Yeah Orijen is awesome I agree, my dog is on the Orijen adult and loves it!! I read somewhere also the you shouldn't mix dry and raw. Just keep in mind that feeding your dog raw meat you have to be very careful with touching your dog around the mouth area after eating because we all know the risks of handling raw meat especially chicken which is what most people feed there dogs when on raw diets, one more point you NEED TO BE EVEN MORE CAREFUL WITH THERE SHIT THAN NORMAL BECAUSE OF More..

Sounds to me that you are just telling yourself that Origen is the answer, when in reality, whilst Origen is brilliant pet food in kibble form, way better than all most any other form of kibble, it is still a processed, commercial dog food, that contains preservatives etc to prolong it's self life, it also has to be transported all the way from Canada to the UK, which adds to the cost considerably.
If you where to put in a bit of effort, you would find that a raw diet would be c More..

We adopted a cat which had been poisoned with Round-up. For years the cat was miserable and had hardly any hair. We ground up chicken with organ meats, some deer meat and threw in taurine and some other supplements. The cat grew its hair back and stopped being neurotic from the skin irritation. The previous owners were shocked to see the difference (they had previously owned my home, moved and couldn't take him with them --also, he was scary looking so not easy to adopt out).

I always thought grain based dog diets were funny.
Ever see a dog chase down a field of grain?
Me neither.
A friend of mine had a service dog she fed raw chickens to.
"Ever see a dog use a barbecue?" Was her favorite saying to over-use.

Raw isn't cheap and it takes a lot of prep to get the mix just right for nutritional value for your dog, but if you can do it, do it! The benefits are incredible. Seen it first hand with my dog. Biggest perk is less poop, especially if you go bone-in meats.

My two dogs are out in the yard chewing on bloody bones from the elk I killed a couple of days ago. The scraps from that alone will last them a month or more. They also get all of the meat, fish and poultry from our table scraps (the rest go to our chickens) and we cook a lot of rice and add it to their regular kibble. That's about as healthy as we can afford.
