20 times around the planet 23-year road trip
Gunther Holtorf's 23-year road tripBack in 1989, as the Berlin Wall fell, Gunther Holtorf and his wife Christine set out on what was meant to be an 18-month tour of Africa in their Mercedes Benz G Wagen. Now, with more than 800,000km (500,000 miles) on the clock, Gunther is still going.
The German former airline executive has travelled the equivalent of 20 times around the planet in the vehicle - which he calls Otto. He says he has never had a serious breakdown. Recently in Vietnam, Canadian-born photographer David Lemke joined Gunther on one section of his epic journey.

That's a hell of a thing. Have been thinking about doing the same myself. Don't know that I have the balls though. 9/11 and succeeding events has instilled a fear of the world in me.
I would love to shoot an eclipse on the border of Somalia and Ethiopia next year, but my balls are too small for that.

@barbarossa The trip those boys are after doesnt sound appealing at all by comparison. They don't seem to fear cold though they'll be traveling through some damned cold country on their flimsy bikes. And traveling around the world on a bike seems damned uncomfortable.
Of course, I was thinking of doing it on a bicycle so clearly I havent thought it through very well. Does avoid islamic strongholds for the most part though which is an interesting observation. Maybe muslims don't like cold w More..

Mercedes G-Class until 95 is a wonderful vehicle... after that it got more SUV like. A modern G-Class would braek down because of electronical problems.
