Special Ed teacher arrested for sex crimes

A Cayce high school teacher is charged by Mount Pleasant police
with having sex with one of his students while both were in The
Lowcountry for the Special Olympics.Cornelius Davis, 29, a
Special Education teaching assistant at Brookland-Cayce High School, is
charged with second-degree criminal sexual conduct. Davis was traveling
as a counselor and basketball coach for the Special Olympics, and the
girl was a Special Olympics participant, according to a police report. The
report said officers were called to the Quality Inn on Patriots
Boulevard on Sunday by the girl’s mother, who reported her daughter,
whose age was not provided, had told her that she had sexual intercourse
with her teacher.

Davis was taken to the Cannon Detention Center in North Charleston
and the girl was taken to Medical University Hospital to be examined,
the report said.According to the report, the girl told a nurse
she had sex with the suspect on Thursday in Cayce, and again on Friday
in Mount Pleasant. The report said another teacher traveling with
the group told officers that Davis came to the girl’s room late Friday
and claimed he had to take the girl to meet her mother at a different
motel. The girl returned to the Quality Inn at about 2:30 a.m. “and said
that she had been walking around the hotel and that is why it took her
so long to return,” the report said. The report maintains that at
about 11 a.m. Saturday, another witness said that she was approached by a
classmate who told her that the girl had been in Davis’ room having sex
with him.A television news station Monday night reported that
Barry Coats, president of the SC Special Olympics, said all volunteers
are given national and local background checks. Coats said Davis’
background checks were up to date.“My concern is for the athlete,
the child,” Coats told the station. “At this point I don’t know who it
is, it hasn’t been released to us. So we will look at how we register
coaches, how we do background check, etc. I think we do a great job.”Lexington
School District 2 attorney Jake Moore told the station that Davis has
been placed on administrative leave and is not allowed back on school
property. Moore said the school district is cooperating fully with the
investigation.Davis is listed on the Brookland-Cayce High School
website as teaching assistant, and was a basketball coach with the
Special Olympics.
