As of August 1, roughly half of the counties in the United States are designated drought disaster areas by the Dept of Agriculture.

@joe prole From numbers that I've seen, expected increase only ranges from 3-6%. Remember, ~15% of the U.S. food supply is imported, including ~50% of fresh fruits, ~20% of fresh vegetables and ~80% of seafood.

@bigoleboobs less rain means less freshwater flowing in the bays and estuaries. this means a higher salinity for bay and ocean water. it may not be catastrophic, but it will have an affect.

Every food item containing corn syrup, which is in most processed foods, is going to cost more because of this drought. All soy products too. GMO doesn't protect against drought. This disaster is going to be hard to come out of. Not much leeway to manoeuver.

I don't know how this is possible seeing that a large number of farms are owned by corporation with deep enough pockets to get some water there. Maybe trying to deepen their pockets.
