Quake rocks Ontario, Quebec

Earthquake rocks Quebec, Ontario

A 5.0-magnitude earthquake has hit Quebec, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, with tremors felt throughout southern Ontario and the northeastern United States.

Initial assessments had measured its strength as being a magnitude 5.5.

The first tremor hit at 1:41 p.m. ET Wednesday south of Echo Lake, Que., 61 kilometres north of Ottawa near the Ontario-Quebec border.

Buildings in Toronto and Ottawa were evacuated in the minutes following the tremors. Windows at Ottawa's city hall shattered.

Employees on Parliament Hill were evacuated from buildings and sent home. Crews were inspecting main and satellite buildings to be sure they were safe. Prime Minister Stephen Harper said he did not feel the earthquake.

  • So how strong was it?

I always wanted to experience an earthquake.. and to my suprise last year I woke up thinking someone was trying to wake me up by shaking me, was chocked no one was there and came to conclusion it was an earthquake, pretty awesome I must say.

It was a 6.8 it lasted for 18 seconds and I experienced it at a place I least expected to expeirence on, namely here in south sweden.

    • well have you ever been near train as it went by? It was a lot like that.... or at least that is only thing i could compare it to... it lasted at least 30 seconds.... i live in Northern Ontario though and probably didn't feel anything like Ottawa or parts of Quebec....

A postal worker i talked to today said she thought she was having a stroke...another guy also said he felt light headed.... i guess a sort of sea sickness sets in after a while lol... personally.. i thought it was pretty cool... More..

    • Close to a train hmm didn't feel like that in the one we had here in south sweden.

But one thing I won't forget is that god damn sound as each pusle shook the earth making the buildings sound like something similar to thunder mixed with jet engine type of sound. It was an amazing and surreal experience.

Don't forget to get sarcastic shirts saying: I survived Ontaria Earthquack 2010. The I survived the earthquake 2009 were quite popular here in south sweden for some reason.

it was felt in 9 states so it had to be felt in ontario its only 100 miles away.
i remember looking at the walls moving up and down and the ceiling moving side to side so i went out on the patio heh.

  • I felt it, my lcd screen shook so I knew it was either a semi truck on the front street or an earthquake.

  • I felt it. Never experienced one before. I was in my car though, and it started swaying a bit, like it was very windy. This was in Stoney Creek, ON.

  • In 28 years of living in Canada, I felt perhaps 4 or 5 earthquakes. After living for 7 years in Taiwan, I've felt over 50. Never will get used to them, though.
