A 25-year-old California man has been charged with drink-driving after causing a crash that saw a petrol tanker go up in flames.
Makop Maghakyan rear-ended the two-trailer truck after 11pm Saturday,
causing nearly 23,000 litres of petrol to catch alight, the LA Times reported.
Footage of the blaze shows a pillar of fire sending smoke billowing across the 134 Freeway in Glendale, Los Angeles County.
Despite the enormous fire triggered by the crash, neither Maghakyan, his passenger or the truck driver were harmed.
Roads engineers are now taking samples to determine if the inferno caused structural damage to the freeway.
More than 100 firefighters and two helicopters attended the blaze, which took more than an hour to extinguish.
