Immediate Aftermath

Rescuers, at the scene of the partial collapse of the roof parking at the Algo Centre Mall in Elliot Lake on Saturday afternoon, believe there are at least two victims buried in the rubble.

Bill Neadles, incident commander with heavy urban search and rescue team from Toronto, says they believe one person trapped in the rubble might still be alive.

“Some of our search members this morning heard a couple of taps,” said Neadles. “They called for quick silence on the site and there was a couple more taps. That was an indication to us that we were dealing with a rescue.”

However, they suspect that a second person in the debris is dead.

Inspector Percy Jollymore of the East Algoma OPP said they have had a visual of a hand and a foot. He added that they cannot confirm the identity of the person.

“The location is such that we cannot approach it at this time,” said Jollymore.

More information will be posted shortly
