re: The Sound of Cracking Ice - dubbed over Star Wars sound effects

Star Wars and Wall-E sound designer Ben Burt used a hammer on a radio-tower guy-wire and a slinky for some of his sound effects. I think that is the sound that overlays the "Sound of Ice Cracking" posted and featured here on LiveLeak, but the recording is slowed down.

The guy-wire/slinky was used for the sound of lasers blasting in Star Wars.

The guy is the first video is NOT Ben Burt, but someone giving a demo.

Second clip is Ben Burt.

  • I hate to disagree with you because the videos were cool, but you really need to go out onto a frozen lake and hear it for yourself. The sound in the video is accurate, and not dubbed onto the video. Just something you have to experience for yourself. There are plenty of videos out there...here is one:

  • Lots of things make a similar sound, including large ice sheets cracking.

I have no idea why you're trying to find a conspiracy in it.

  • I'm shocked that so many people don't know what cracking ice on a lake sounds like! I'm honestly shocked at al the people who don't believe it!

    • @bgwrkr

It's all good man. I guess if you haven't grown up around it and seen it in real life it could be hard to believe. They are most def. amazing noises to hear in real life, and sometimes nerve wracking!
