Safe Mode: On
Anticapitalist Trick or Treat march storms luxury apts, forces Jack Evans to agree to a meeting

Halloween, the 31st of October. Some call it Earth Night, some say the
ghosts of the fallen take vengance on their torturers this night. On Oct
31, 2012, Defending Animal Rights Today and Tommorrow and the
Anarchist-Alliance DC Network teamed up for a night of anti-capitalist
trick or treating.

Two of the targets were exectives of customers of puppy-killing, animal
caging Huntingdon Life Sciences or HLS, a contract animal testing
laboratory. One was Anitia Eoloft, Director for Federal Government
Relations for Wells Fargo, notorious for their investments in the GEO
Group, one of the worlds largest builders of private prisons.

Both Brian Maloney (global issues management for HLS customer
Astra-Zenica) and Anita Eolof of Wells Fargo had their apartment
buildings stormed by anti capitalist trick or treaters, though no
attempt was made to go to their individual units.

John Richardson of Abbot Fund, a subsidiary of HLS customer Abbot Labs
got a traditional outdoor "trick or treat" session at his swanky
Georgetown home.

The final target was Jack Evans, Ward 2 Councilmember. He has been
responsible for closing three homeless shelters in downtown DC, leading
to what the Washington Post calls a severe shortage of shelter beds. One
of these closings, Franklin Shelter, is still in contention and
activsts have been seeking to reopen it since 2008. He also is as
reponsible as anyone for spending three quarters of a billion dollsrs on
the baseball stadium and destroying an entire Gay neighborhood to do
so. Finally, he was involved in failed attempts to ban Occupy protests
without 12 hours notice to the cops.

With up to 50 trick or treaters outside, Jack Evans felt he had no
choice but to negotiate. He came out, and tried to answer for his crimes
with puffery about "permanent supportive housing" that turned out to be
very temporary for former Frankln Shelter residents. He trotted out
excuse after excuse for why people are dying of hypothermia on DC
streets every winter.

In the end, Jack Evans agreed to set up a "press conference" with
activists so long as he was permitted to bring the Mayor as well. He
will be held to this promise!

As the protest left Jack Evan's home and marched into Georgetown, police
at the interesection of M street forced marchers into the extremely
crowded NYC style pedestrian pens at the intersection. Protesters tried
to bypass the pens by the street but were driven back by police. Police
then issed a "first warning" for blocking the sidewalk. There was no
place for anyone to go due to the Halloween crowds.

The arrest warning could have caused Halloween partygoers in the same
area not part of the protest to panic and could have in that way
sparked a stampede. Similar stampedes at rock concerts have led to serious injuries and deaths,

One more point can be made with this mix of issues: While there is talk
of austerity budgets after the election, NIH and the Federal government
are spending $12 billion on vivisection. The attempt to close DC
homeless shelters in 2011 was over a $30M budget shortfall. In other
words, that $12 billion could double the number of shelter beds in 330
cities the size of DC! About $15M of that money is spend addicting
animals to drugs, money that could be spent instead on addiction
rehabilitation programs.
