Understanding Hearing, Molecule By Molecule

Berkeley Lab scientists have for the first time pieced together the three-dimensional structure of one of nature’s most exquisite pieces of machinery, a gossamer-like filament of proteins in the inner ear that enables the sense of hearing and balance.

Their work opens the door for a more fundamental understanding of how hearing works. It may also lead to improved ways to treat some forms of h More..

  • The hearing system is truly one of the most amazing things ever to be perfected by evolution. This article delves into the system in a very specific area.

Not mentioned is the impedance matching that transforms acoustic energy from a gaseous medium (sound pressure waves in the air) into a solid medium (along the eardrum & three ossicles) and finally into the liquid medium (the endolymph and perilymph located within the cochlea).

Hell, I could talk about this all day...

I guess that I'm just jealous that my system doesn't work. ;)
