Emergency Audio Following July 4th, 2010 Parade Accident in Bellevue, Iowa

Emergency radio communications immediately following an accident involving a runaway horse carriage at the Bellevue, Iowa Heritage Days celebration parade, July 4, 2010.

A 60-year old woman who was riding in the carriage was killed while trying to regain control of the horses. The two horses pulling the carriage spooked when the bridle on one of them fell off. Over twenty people were injured, most of them children who had lined the parade route to pick up candy that had been thrown by floats in the parade.

The July 4th Heritage Days celebration is the largest celebration of the year in Bellevue. The 2010 parade was the 47th annual Heritage Days parade in the picturesque small town nestled in the hills along the Mississippi river. Residents say that this was the first serious accident in the history of the parade.
