Turkey's photo of the year: Bleeding IDF soldier

Picture of bleeding Navy commando assaulted aboard Marmara wins Turkish photojournalism award; news website uses difficult image to create puzzle for readers

Photojournalism award, Turkish-style: The picture of a bleeding IDF soldier aboard the Marmara won Turkey's 2010 Photo of the Year Award in the News category; the contest was held by the Turkish photojournalism association.

Nine people were killed onboard the Gaza-bound Turkish ship after IDF troops who raided it encountered violent resistance by "peace activists" armed with an assortment of weapons.

One of Turkey's largest websites, Milliyet, used the difficult image to create a puzzle for its readers.

The photograph shows a beaten up IDF soldier with his face and head bloodied while three Marmara passengers grab him and twisting his arm. The picture was shot by a Turkish photographer who hid copies in a hidden pocket and managed to smuggle them out of Israel.

Turkish media outlets did not blur the blood stains or the Israeli soldier's face.

The winning pictures were chosen out of 1,632 photos in six different categories. Prizes were handed out in the beginning of the month with Turkey's parliament speaker, deputy prime minister and various parliamentarians among those in attendance.

Israel's Navy commandoes raided and took over the Marmara on May 31 of last year after it attempted to breach the blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip. Among its passengers, the vessel carried members of the IHH terror group who ambushed the soldiers. Several troops were assaulted and abducted into the ship. The unexpected violence forced commandoes to resort to live fire, killing nine passengers.

About a week after the incident, the Turkish media published photos of bleeding and beaten up IDF troops.

  • if indeed its true there were 1,632 photos participating in the contest, and that photo beat them all, then it seems the turks are not intersted in art for the sake of art, but rather for the sake of politics, and in this case- the old n boring ritual of bashing israel once again.

  • For Turkey this is the photo of their lifetime. Not too often do you see a Turk manhandling an Israeli. I am suprised they didnt replace their flag with this picture.

    • It proves that the IDF team did not go into the situation with the intent of violence. Otherwise, that soldier would have been fully armed and laid waste to the scum that were waiting to beat him.

    • A shitload of weapons bound for a savage terror gang? I wouldn't have minded if the IDF had just bombed the scow down to its waterline.

    • Bullshit..they were prepared..or so they thought. They carried out an airassault from helicopters. The occupants of the vessel though didn't react with fear how they predicted...instead the soldiers were swarmed as they landed on the decks and attacked with whatever happened to be laying around.

  • "Nine people were killed"? Why don't you say nine Turkish people shot in the head and upper body by IDF forces in international water?

At least these guys didn't kill any of the IDF guys that came aboard. When obviously from this picture they could of at any time.

    • Why don't you say... nine armed "peace activists" breaching a legal blockade attacking IDF forces upon boarding were shot in the head and upper body.

Under international law Israel can use force when boarding a ship attempting to breach a LEGAL blockade. Under international law Israel can also board a ship in international waters attempting to breach said blockade.

Hell the Turks own inquiry said the blockade was legal and use of force..

    • Those shots were fired way too late in the game as far as I'm concerned, after far too much provocation by the "peaceful protesters".

He said Mama Mama, the President's a fool

  • Frankly, its a very startling photo, and captures the sheer madness/confusion of that night/event in my opinion

It was also probably the biggest political event for Turk's last year.

Considering the media lockdown by Israel after the tragedy (I'm not saying massacre), when all cameras and media were confiscated (not stolen) by the Israeli's, and the fact that the photo had to be smuggled out, this provides an extra context for the choice.

    • but to make it photo of the year, out of more then 1600 photos???

its quite abvious it was elected only cuase the soldier in the photo looks humiliated and in turky,or arab states, a photo of israeli soldier being humiliated can beat more then 1600 photos, regardless the photo quality.

  • Well, if you assault any ship in international waters by repelling down from a helicopter while shooting rubber bullets, it would be naive to expect a warm welcome.

  • Well a pic like that doesnt do much for the whole ''they were just peaceful activists'' theory they and all the other liberal outlets and jihadist countries wanted the world to believe.

Could you imagine the world's outrage if Israel released photos of people it shot and the ship and captioned the photo 'AH HA'
