There are some restrictions we do make on free speech in the US. Being a bigot is not protected under the first amendment, as such.
In essence the fighting words doctrine makes the distinction that it's okay to criticize an ideology, but one should refrain from inciting hatred toward a person or group of people who believe in such an ideology.
